We didnt expect the non stop walking and trekking, though we were tired after a long day. We were able to cherish the beauty of the Forest and the Nature in Alishan Park. We took the Alishan Forest Rail Way Train to our destination. Our Hotel owner gave us a map where to go. He suggested a trail towards an old Trail or so called Alishan Teyufe Trail "Giant Tree trail" less people go here, he said not so much of China Tourist. So we decided to go there, it's more than 30mins walking but it's worth it, we enjoyed the serenity of the place and it's so ZEN there. By the way, if you plan to visit the park, buy some snacks and water.

Been to Taiwan a few times for the past few years but first time to Alishan. We took High Speed Rail to Chiayi and took the 11.40am bus at Platform 3 just outside the station entrance. As we book a night stay at one of the minsu before going to Alishan the next day therefore our ride to minsu first was about 80mins. If u wan to go straight to Alishan recreation park, it will take 2.5hrs journey from HSR station and if i rem correctly, it cost TWD290 one way.The ride up the mountain gets more winding the higher you go and bumpy at times. There is a entrance fee of TWD150 per person before you enter the recreation park. There are basically two ways of moving around the park, by train or by mini bus with serveral pickup/drop-off points for the bus. Not too sure about the train part as we did not take the train but heard that frequency is every 30mins.Depend on individual but personally i felt you do not need whole day at the park. You can complete the main attractions within 4hrs. Nothing very special about the forest... all you see is trees and hills and a temple with a few special area for photo taking. Maybe there will be will more to see during the Cherry Blossom season. Unlikely to return to this place for visit given that the journey is quite long just to get there. Felt that the scenery is more beautiful at other mountain area such as CingJing in Nantou than here.FYI- You can actually use "Youyou Card" to pay for the bus ride. If you want to use cash, make sure you have exact amount as driver do not have change for you. You can top up your card at the 7 eleven at Chiayi station or Alishan 7 eleven if your card do not have sufficient money. There r also a few eateries around and my favorite 7 eleven store. In case you have luggage with you, do not worry..as you can deposit it at the shelves at the visitor information centre but as its not in locker form therefore the staff are not liable for your belongings.

I loved walking trails, although I think it is not necessary to make them that way - every path is made of wood including (too many) stairs. It is attractive with some platforms and viewing points, but I would prefer natural paths... Spending around 3 hours there was enough. And do try wasabi! Rare opportunity to get fresh one in Alishan or stalls near the temple.

Alishan is one of my favorite places in Taiwan. The forest is stunningly beautiful. Walking into Alishan makes it feel like you have stepped back in time. The largest drawback is the high number of Chinese tourists at Alishan. It can make it difficult to explore Ali Mountain at times.

Alishan National Scenic Area is covering Alishan Forest Recreation Area known for rich flora and fauna. Like most of the tourist, I only manage to visit Alishan Forest Recreation Area, a small part of the national scenic area and there are a lot of attractions to explore:1. sister's pond2. Magnolia Garden3. Pig-head like old stump4. heart shape like old stump5. 3 generations tree6. divine tree which is about 2300 years old7. The famous Taiwan Red Cypress 8. Alihan Museum9. Alishan train ride 10. Alishan Information Centre for the rubber stamping collection 11. Lunch at Alishan restaurant for steamboat

Taiwan's best scenes are its people, a Chinese author once wrote and yes he is correct. The train is a joke. it only goes half way and takes a bit more than 2 hours. For first 70 minutes you see nothing but ugly Taiwanese architecture if it can be called actual architecture. After that you see some hills and greens and some clouds. These are no way mountains. Think Himalayas, Andes, Rockies, Alps. Those are mountains. These are hills, filled with once again ugly homes and power lines. We live in San Francisco and we travel more than 260 days a year. No one should come to Taiwan to see Alishan. If you are here for some other reasons, you should try to come here so that you can say you did it. But, try to take the bus both ways. We took the train, then took the shuttle bus to Shizhuo. From there one more bus to Alishan. All along we kept thinking it is so underwhelming. However, the views from the bus is much better than from the train. Bus takes a bit over 2 hours from Chiayi. Just returned from NE India and there the clouds over Naga Hills and Khasi Hills and the aboriginals and the native culture all were actually spectacular. Alishan is NOT.

Came here for viewing the sun-rise. You can either take a train up or choose to go with a mini-bus. The latter is more convenient. When you arrive at the 7-Eleven near the Visitors Centre, there will be someone asking you if you wanna join their sun-rise morning tour.Forest-trekking is good as there are walking trails in place. Go to the train station for a map showing suggested trekking route.
