Imagine what once was a military fortress became a magical cultural place in the shape of volcanoes. Efrain regions left this amazing place especially built for you. 5 complexes, a great view to the city, excellent acoustics, vigilance, low cost parking lot. How can people say there's no cultural activity in Guatemala?

From regular plays to ballet to concerts, there's pretty much always something to see here. The complex is amazingly huge and located right in the center of the city. The theater is, by far, the best in the whole city. Parking is huge and the premises are always maintained in a perfect manner and I personally consider them around the safest. At all costs, however, try to NOT eat inside. Food prices are way overboard and the quality is average at best, not to mention that there hardly is any variety. If you're in town you should check out the scheduling and, if there's anything, you most definitely should see it. The experience is very well worth it.

It is really a complex consisting in several artistic spaces: an outdoor theater, the chamber theater, the main theater and the Museum of the Old Fort of San José that hosts a small military museum, where a replica of the first fortified city of Mesoamerica, the Mayan city of Punta de Chiminos is exhibited. The National School of Art and the National Cultural Radio also operate in the complex. The complex designed and painstakingly built by Efrain Recinos, one of the most renowned Guatemala artists, took about 16 years to build and is inspired in the Maya Culture. It is located on a hill overlooking the Civic Center, the heart of modern Guatemala City. It is probably the main icon of modern Guatemalan architecture. Efrain Recinos devoted a big part of his artistic career to the Nationa Theater and actually lived there during a big part of the construction and even after its inauguration in 1978.You can visit during the day, it is a very open space, in a park-like environment, with great views of the Civic Center and the mountains that surround the valley.Definitely worth your time. Should be over in 1-2 hours. I just visited for a jazz dance show where my daughter danced. It still impresses me when I visit.

Guatemala's National Theater is really a master piece, design by the great Maestro Efrain Recinos (1928-2011+). An architectural piece inspired by the Mayan culture but built and expressed in its unique design.

The National Theater of the Cultural Center is inspired by what was the Mayan culture. Without falling into the copismo, it is a true integration of landscape and iconology Mayanist within contemporary architecture. In other words, these "functional sculptures" are an example of true originality. Thus it could be said that nowhere is the influence of Greek culture repetitive, which is a good example of local magnificence the rest of the American continent and in the world, must be assumed to be universal local level.
