This is a beautiful forest and in one morning we saw 40 bird species (good in this difficult habitat). The list included emerald toucanet, spangle-cheeked tanager and collared trogon.

The Savegre Reserve is maintained by the Savegre Lodge, a hotel and spa in San Gerardo de Dota. Guests of the Lodge can freely access the reserve whereas people staying elsewhere must pay $15 per person entry, which is a bit expensive although I understand that trail maintenance must be very expensive for them. This is a superb section of primary and secondary cloud forest, and it is a botanical and bird watcher's paradise. Be aware that the hiking is very challenging: The entire area is at an elevation over 7,500 feet, and in addition the trails are very steep and often muddy and slippery. You'll need to be wearing boots and it's important to carry enough food and water, especially if you do one of the longer and steeper trails such as Los Robles. The trails do vary in length, so your visit could last anywhere from 1-2 hours to as long as 5-6 hours. We hiked all the trails in the reserve without a guide, and we were exhausted but elated at the end. We saw a lot of fantastic birds, and we also enjoyed some of the magical areas, such as a ridge on the Los Robles trail with hanging mosses on dwarf oaks that was simply amazing. This is a great place to go if you are reasonably physically fit and if you love nature.

I think this is a very good destination when in Costa Rica. Being in a mountain valley, the birding is fantastic. The path to the local waterfalls is well marked but can be a little rough in places but the views are definitely worth the journey. I was able to experience a horseback tour and loved it. My ride was very amiable and I was able to enjoy the local culture up close. The spa on site is a welcome luxury after touring the walking paths, the hot stone massage is dreamy. The staff know their stuff! The restaurant on site is well priced and the food is delicious. The chef combines interesting ingredients to create some delicious flavour experiences. You can eat indoors or enjoy your meal while watching the numerous hummingbirds which visit the surrounding gardens, on their patio. The staff at Savegre have English skills and work very hard to make sure your stay is enjoyable. The rooms are clean, comfortable and pleasing to the eye. While there is WIFI, there are no TVs in the rooms. I recommend this hotel for those who want to get in touch with the natural beauty of Costa Rica or are wanting a little peace and quiet while on a busy vacation in Costa Rica.

Walk through the grounds of Savegre Lodge and climb the dirt road that goes up the mountainside. There are several trails branching off the road into the forest. They are nicely maintained and provide excellent views of the undergrowth, massive trees, and wildlife. Birdwatching is great there, as well as the garden of Savegre Lodge as they have many hummingbird feeders. The lodge reception desk can provide information and trail maps.

And that was in the "green season"! Get Marino Chacon for your guide, he knows all the best birding spots!

Had a guided walk through the Savegre Reserve that (thankfully) started with a 4 X 4 trip up the mountain so that we could enjoy the walk down. Saw loads of different birds and insects, walked through dry & wet habitats and marvelled at what nature had created. Our guide was Carlos, trip booked through Dantica Cloud Forest Hotel.

Great trails for hiking in Savegre Reserve, especially to the first waterfall. The trail continues to a second waterfall but is in very poor (and a little dangerous) condition. Be careful! The trail to the waterfall could be a little better marked in the part by the trout farm, but otherwise is easy to follow. Great birding!

If you have the time, this is an remote adventure where waterfalls tumble and the greens are so green they are breath-taking. This definitely a walk on the wildside and one of the finest birdwatching experience in all of Costa Rica. .
