You will find The National Theatre a truly impressive building, no matter what theatres you've been to. The beautiful integration of classic theatre design with Costa Rican culture has to be seen to be appreciated. The National Theatre is smack dab in the middle of downtown, right across from the Grand Hotel, so you don't have any excuses to miss this place. And, if you're feeling a little parched or hungry, the restaurant within the theatre pace is quite nice as well. Great food and coffee worth taking a load off for after a hot day seeing the sights.

Do yourself a favor and pay the $10 ticket fee to see this beautiful, historical theater beyond the entrance. You will be treated to a tour with a well-spoken guide who is very knowledgeable about the theater. We even tried to tip our guide, but he kindly refused saying, " we cannot accept tips". Go early. We were there when they opened at 9am, and had a private tour as we were the only visitors at that time. We were allowed to stay as long as we liked. It is a beautiful place, and you won't regret you visited.

This old building is really, really special. Back in the day, when CR was flush with cash from the coffee trade, they built this theatre and spared no expense. We took the $10 each tour and it was well worth it.

A little bit of Costa Rica history has been captured in the grandiose setting of this theater. From the spectacular façade, to the lush interiors and the feel that you have step into a former, rich century, visiting the theater should be a stop in any visit to downtown San José.And don't forget to have lunch, coffee and cake at the cafe inside the theater. A wonderful, luxurious atmosphere, good prices, excellent attention, and great coffee.

This is an impressive theatre on first sight but we were amazed at the beauty once we were inside. We had our own guide with us who explained all about the construction and art work. Entry is US$10 and worth every cent.Really do not miss if you are in San Jose

After beautiful rivers and deep jungles, what a surprise to find this treasure. Magnificent theater built in 1897, I believe, and decorated in several European styles. Paintings on the ceilings are magnificent even though the artist was never in Costa Rica. The painting over the grand stairway has several mistakes but serves its purpose in attempting to show Costa Rican life of the day. The upstairs "lobby" is elegant with furnishings in French tradition. The theater itself has original wrought iron seating which can be moved when the floor is hoisted up to make a ballroom. Amazing engineering. Well worth a visit. The gold leaf alone is worth the time. Children may not be interested.

We arrived at opening on a Monday - we were first to arrive. We purchased two tickets costing a total of $20. We asked for an English guide. José was our guide and he was excellent. He shared many stories about the theatre and had some interesting photos to share on his iPad. At the conclusion of his tour, we were invited to spend as much time as we wanted to view the theatre and take photos (NO FLASH permitted). Such a lovely theatre. We did want to show our appreciation to José with a small tip, but the tour guides are not permitted to accept gratuity.

The theatre is one of the most spectacular buildings in San Jose. It is worth a visit. It is in the style of a European theatre and built on the wealth of sisal. Our children did not think it was very exciting so you may not wish to bring them.

This tour was very informative, beautiful building, I felt like I was in Europe waiting to see the opera. Very decorative. I loved seeing this and learning the history behind this building. A treasure in the middle of the city.

Disappointed that we were able to see only outside and lobby. Nicely decorated. Small gift shop with variety of items for sale.
