Impressive building surrounding by impressive sights. Uninspired exhibits but the ones showcasing artwork is probably the better to see. Kazakh history is difficult to document and it shows. I wonder if maintenance will be an issue in the future. The 'Golden' man displays was disappointing.

This Museum only opened in July 2014 and is a stunning building and impressive collection inside, it is easy to spend a few hours here and I found the Modern Art section quite unique. The scale and size of the place. like many other places in Astana, will just leave you lost for words. I think it must be closed on Mondays, as other Museums are in Astana often are, because it was open when I went back the next day. This is a must in your list of things to see if you are trying to understand the frenetic development of modern Astana and it's free too ! No coffee shop or restaurant yet though.

Well worth a trip. Opened in summer 2014. Lower level is archeological artifacts from the KZ region and pre-history. Then they have a level about old costumes. The next level is the history of KZ mostly starting late 1800s to present. Good stuff about the USSR and KSSR, WWII and the nuclear arms race. Break up of the USSR, and then the formation of the new government in Kazakhstan and antinuclear stance. The upper level is a great collection of modern art from KZ. The whole thing can take several hours unless you want to linger. NO photos allowed inside the collection :-(Very worth the time, and you will also be near the Pyramid of Peace and Accord, one of the 3 main mosques, and several other sites. Plan to spend at least half a day in the area. Note: no restaurants to speak of in the area.

... and trying hard to be interactive - what else would you think of this capital all from 21st century. I found the museum by accident - the latest Lonely Planet does not mention even plans to build it. So that is how fast things get done in Astana!Take a guide (I did not, and regret it) - the labelling is not on 21st century level yet. You will not understand a lot, and miss out on the great stuff on display there, if you try it on your own. Not that it is not fun even so :)

The national museum is HUGE and it is free admission. Displays are not crowded and some of the interactive venues are just plain cool. Tours are given for Russian speakers, Kazakh speakers and we had a special guide for English speakers. Unsure of other languages. One caution and the reason I did not give this sight a five rating. This place must have cost mega millions to build, but apparently they can't afford toilet paper in the WC's. Better bring your own.

I am not a museum person but i loved this national museum. I wish I visited it on my first day in Astana. But I didn't know it existed. Luckily I visited it on my last day. It's brand new: it only opened the beginning of July 2014. There is no admission fee; entrance is free. It has a lot of interactive screens. I liked it a lot. There is so much information on Kazachstan, and for instance future building concepts for Astana. There are 9 halls and a nice small souvenir/gift shop. Be sure to await the start of the excursion, (I just got lucky at exactly 12:00) because the LED-bird on the ceiling will fly and images of Kazachstan are projected on the wall. The halls:Hall of contemporart art 1Hall of contemporary art 2Hall of gold 1Hall of gold 2History hallHall of ancient and medieval historyEtnography hall (like!)Astana hall (like!)Hall of independent KazachstanThe museum is located on the right of the Square of Independence, the opposite side of where the Hazret Sultan mosque is. I uploaded two pictures. You will surely recognize it. Again: big recommend.

If you have to visit only one, choose this one. Most exhibits have info in English. Several floors. Children may enjoy the ethnography exhibit the most. Much about Kazakhstan's past and anticipated future. Contemporary and modern art exhibited large oil paintings. Limited gift shop.Saw no evidence of food availability.FreeOpen 7 days a week.Open only a month so taxis may not know where it is. Explain it is across from the Pyramid in an extremely unusually designed building. Yes, that is true of many in Astana but...it is also near Highvill and the new major mosque.I did not look for wheelchair access but probably it is there.Recommended either for folk passing through Astana or those who wanted to get acquainted ted with their new community if they are expats.
