The Gurminj Musical Instruments Museum was part of our tour of Dushanbe. It was the home of a musician and is very small and easy to see. There are musical instruments everywhere. unfortunately there is no real explanation or anyone giving any info of how / why the collection was created. All that said give it a look you will be amazed, after all you will have travelled a long way if you get to Dushanbe so why not.

The museum is very small but has an amazing collection of instruments. The guide while I was there only spoke Russian and I only speak English so we couldn't converse much, but he did play some instruments for me, which I enjoyed.

An individual runs this museum out of a personal devotion to keep alive his national culture. He has had offers to buy his collection for a large sum, and he has refused, because he wants it available to the public. I respect that greatly. The museum is the size of a three-car garage, you can see it all in about 15 minutes. You may end up staying half a day, however, if the owner and his friends invite you to stay for tea and osh. Anyone with any musical appreciation should see this museum.

As the earlier reviewer says, 'museum' is a misleading name for this place which doesn't even have a sign on the door nor labels on the exhibits (which are mostly Asian stringed instruments). When I wandered in I spent 5 minutes looking around the 'museum' but much longer jamming with the little ensemble of musicians who had gathered on the tea-bed area in the yard and were just trying out a selection of tunes for their own amusement mixing traditional and modern instruments and styles over a few vodkas and snacks. The atmosphere was fantastic and probably my best experience in Dushanbe. But this is not a 'show' - just an informal gathering of friends, and if you arrive and there is no such gathering then you are likely to have an entirely different experience than the one I so enjoyed.

Small museum whose courtyard often hosts concerts. Unpretentious but hard to appreciate without guiding.

Gurminj was a giant of Soviet cinema, who also developed a passion for collecting and playing musical instruments. Fortunately he passed on this passion for traditional music to his son, Iqbol, who now runs this museum, maintains a small recording studio on site and in his spare time (!) leads some of the most celebrated traditional and popular music groups in Tajikistan - Shams and Mirzob. Because Iqbol and members of the group Samo, are so well-connected to the cultural life of Tajikistan and Central Asia, this museum has become a musical hub where traditional musicians jam together, perform and innovate. This means that visitors are treated to live performances on the museum's growing collection of instruments, by some of the best performers in the country! With a bit more information in other languages, I would be rating this museum 'excellent'. If you are lucky, there will be someone English speaking around when you visit. However, a bit more written explanation in the museum would not go amiss.
