(1922) she sparkles over the plaza, so when we went up to have nice view on the park we discover that they are renovating it at the moment and we have a quick peak inside this huge cathedral in construction. The renovation on the outside is outstanding. I'm sure the inside will be too.

I hope the inside is restored as well as the outside is progressing.Dominates Parque Cepredes. Can get a little hot at noon but then you go for a beer!

just like any other school in cuba, full of colours and fancy and sometimes not so fancy looking building structures..one of the emilio bacardi properties turned into a school and it's so nice! met some lovelies there and since i'm also a teacher it was so nice to give out my crayons and notebooks - they loved it! :)

A most see land mark of Santiago sitting in the middle of the city. Repairs are ongoing as Sandy damage the structure. Nevertheless a sense of peace and prayer is present.

Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption on the Parque Cespedes is really the symbol of the city. The church "Nuestra Señora de la Asunción" exist as long as Santiago is a city. Not always in this form a shape of course. The first stone version was completed in 1555.In the following years the cathedral was burned, plundered, set on fire and plundered again! Natural disasters such an earthquake and hurricanes also forced to close it several times .The hurricane Sandy passed very close to Santiago in 2012, it sustained some damage and palm trees on 'Parque Cespedes' were all destroyed.The current Cathedral is from 1818 and is being renovated to celebrate 500 years of Santiago founding by Diego Velasquez in 1515.There are also always groups of musicians in the park up front, you can get a taxi up front and many propositions, which have nothing to do with church services ;-).

In real need a ton of work - Catholic church needs to step up and put some money into the place to bring a major historical building back to it glory

A beautiful building but the ongoing repair works mean it is little more than a building site at the moment and it isn't easy to get a real sense of the working church. Better as a hustler free viewpoint to look over the square or viewed from below where you get a sense of how it dominates the plaza.

The cathedral was being restored after the huge damage done by hurricane Sandy, but we were shown around very kindly supervisor/?priest.

The hurricane damage to Santiage de Cuba was extensive. The cathedral was damaged and is being repaired. Cespedes Square is still a lovely place to hang out if you don't mind being hassled by locals trying to sell you something every few minutes. I, for one, enjoyed talking with them even if it meant buying one a beer.

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago de Cuba is the principal cathedral in the country dominating downtown's Cespedes Square. A good view of it is from the rooftop cafe of the Casa Granda which is kitty-corner to it.

Unfortunatelly the interior was under repairment. The only church in Cuba with five naves. The exterior is imposing and magnificent. Don't miss it!

En janvier 2015 la cathédrale est en travaux de restauration intérieur et extérieur - on peut y voir quand même le style colonial de l'édifice

la arquitectura y localización en el centro de la ciudad, llena de belleza y de historia, la puedes ver llena de feligreses y devotos a la hora de la misa y de turistas cuando no hay misa.

Побывала в этом соборе в момент окончания какого-то религиозного праздника. Народ толпой выходил после богослужения под веселое пение церковного хора. Сам собор является главным украшением парка Сеспедес, величественно возвышаясь над ним. Главное, на что обратила внимание внутри собора это изображение Спасителя с разорванной грудью и обнажившимся сердцем. Это как-бы символизирует открытость для всех, готовность пожертвовать собой для людей.
