Having visited some of the largest shopping malls in the world, this mall is not exactly in the same class. In fact, it’s not in the same class as most neighborhood malls in the U.S. However, overall it is still solid.Location:Las Colinas Mall is located in the center of the city, but not quite in El Centro (downtown). A taxi there will cost you about $4 dollars or less (as of 2014) from most hotels in the city. The neighborhood is fairly safe, but like anywhere in Santiago, this is a place where you will want to be careful after dark.It’s located about a 10 minute walk from Estadio Cibao, which is the largest stadium in the Dominican Republic, so this is a convenient place to hang out before or after taking in a baseball game (worth doing as some of the Winter League games held here may feature upwards of 40 current MLB players). Features:Although small in stature, this mall still has all the features that you would expect to find in a traditional mall of a fair size. It is comfortably air conditioned in a city that can be sweltering. There is a children’s play area, complete with a train ride that goes around the bottom level. There is also a cinema, food court, parking garage, a nightclub, and like many of the largest malls in the world, a grocery store. There are escalators and elevators to help you move between the 5 floors (although only the bottom 4 are true floors). And, for anyone obsessed with accessories for their cell phones, Las Colinas will be your newfound heaven on earth, as there are accessory stands throughout the mall.There are technically over a 120 stores, although many of them are kiosks. Nevertheless, you will find stores covering the spectrum of everything you would expect to find in a standard mall: clothing, electronics, a hairdresser, a bank, a store for every cell phone company operating in the Dominican Republic, etc. I did not notice any official mall Wifi service, but there was free Wifi service throughout the mall provided by a number of different stores, and I had no problem staying online.Lastly, there seem to be security roaming both the mall and the parking areas, so it feels like a safe place to be.Prices:This is definitely not the cheapest place to shop. Downtown (“El Centro”) on Calle de Sol (“Sun Street”) is where you want to go for lower prices, but this involves walking outdoors. For those overwhelmed by the Dominican heat, shopping indoors may be worth the higher prices.Schedule: Las Colinas Mall is opened 8AM to midnight on weekdays, and 9AM to midnight on weekends and holidays, and the food court keeps the same hours. The movie theater opens either 5:30 (weekdays) or 4:30 (weekends) and stays open until midnight. The grocery store (SuperMercado Jumbo) closes at 10. The banks keep shorter hours closing around 7 on weekdays, 1 on Saturdays, and not opening at all on Sundays. The other stores are supposed to be open generally from 9:30 AM until the closing of the mall, but I have found that some open later, close earlier, and some are not open at all on Sundays.Overall Impression:Although small by international standards, this is still a solid mall. It’s a good place to head if you find yourself urgently needing something during your stay in Santiago, as you will likely be able to find it there. I would not plan to spend an entire day there shopping, but you can certainly burn a couple hours, more if you eat at the food court or take in a movie. It’s not the cheapest place to shop, but the prices are not outrageous. I would not put Las Colinas Mall on the list of places you must visit in Santiago, but I think that it is safe to describe it as a solid, okay place to visit.
