(Petra Bacovska)

Based on Trip Advisor reviews, we rented a car and drove from the Bridgetown cruise port to the St Nicholas Abbey and really enjoyed the $18/pp tour of this nicely restored sugar plantation. This was one of the historic highlights of our day long trip to Barbados and I would highly recommend it to anyone that wants to experience an old sugar plantation. You can sample the excellent rum and enjoy the tropical trees in the courtyard behind the plantation house. Don't miss the walk over to the old sugar millTip- turn left out of the plantation and visit Cherry Hill to view the beaches on the windward side of Barbados!

What a place ....steeped in history ...you must watch the video of the early settlers coming into Barbados from the uk ...fascinating ....building bricks from Bonnybridge in Scotland were used for ballast on the tall ships , then unloaded , and used around the Abbey for paths ....amazing connection ..

The abbey is well worth the trip. There were a few highlights from watching the cane being crushed to listening to the guide talk us through the downstairs rooms of the main house to watching the interesting film from the 1930s. They have also converted the stables to make a nice spot for a drink or lunch. The only bit that could be improved would be to have a bit more information about the rum distilling process rather than be told how much we can buy the bottles of rum for (the answer is they are very expensive!). It would also be nice to see other parts of the building but I am not sure if they have been restored.

A specialty rum distiller and plantation. Beautiful set up - the stable turned into a key building was especially nice - as was the terrace area. Maureen gave a very nice tour and went out her way to see that we got to see everything despite the last tour already had begun. Recommend visiting this - only wish I could have had a moonlight dinner there but we were heading home that day! Thanks

They will etch your bottle while you wait and the rum is oh so smooth. Grounds are beautiful and the drive is too.

I can truly recommend this place! It's an oasis in Barbados and turning left leaving the place an incredible view is waiting for you. Take the tour and watch the hilarious movie about the distillery's history. We had lunch here. As a dietician, it was hard finding something nutritious (as all over Barbados since all food is either white or yellow/fried). Also, make sure you order in time (1 hour or so before closing) as you will get the evil eye if you're late.

We went here on advice of some people we met on a catamaran. It was a cool drive up to the plantation from Bridgetown neat steep roads to get to the special house. If you brush by you can get through in 10 min but if you look around at the history and show some interest you can spend a couple of hours. There is a 1/2 hour film that is extraordinary from the early days awesome!!. The grounds a are well kept and we even had the pleasure of meeting the owner Simon, awesome guy who gave us a sample of some of the best rum I have ever tasted(like fine cognac). The guides gave a very informative tour of the house which gave a great history perspective. I would highly recommend this trip/tour.

The house is gorgeous and our guide provided us with a lot of helpful information but we felt a little rushed because we showed up close to closing (3pm). Go early if you want to take your time. The rum was delicious.

The House is interesting but in five minutes you have seen all. The surrounding are very restful and the punch they offer delicious.

As a tour professional and a guide I am a rather hard critic of tours I attend. We had an excellent tour of the 17th century house and rum making facilities today. There is also a wonderful film from 1930s home movies that is narrated by the former owner - great visuals and his storyline is well detailed and really quite humorous. Our guide was both enthusiastic and excellent and the tour was full of interesting and nuanced history. Of course, impossible to complain about the included rum punch and tasting of the aged rums. The Abbey only sells rum on site and it is a special product. You can have the bottle engraved and, as a bonus, if you return with the empty they will refill at half price!
