This was a quite surprising to see the level of sophistication around cock fighting in Puerto Rico. Diggerent clubs have fights on different nights and finally after asking around, I found someone at a gas station who was fairly involved in the sport and directed me to Gallera Las Palmas. It was a bit late when I arrived and ended up double parking in a overly full lot. Not speaking a lot of Spanish I wasn't sure what to expect. Parking ended up being $3, and it was $10 to enter for men, women seemed to get in free. There was a small ring where the roosters fought. What was interesting was how intense the crowd got prior to each match. there was an eruption of screaming and betting and then cheering once the roosters were released. This isn't for everyone and wasn't where I would choose to spend a free afternoon but I found the cultural twist to be intriguing. I was also surprised to see families and children there.
