A taste of Haliburton! Just 5 minutes north of Haliburton Village on the 118, Moon Shadow Winery is easy to get to, a sweet country store with charming cottagy decor, and a winery. It took 2 years to get an official designation of maple-wine and 'estate' means that the maple syrup is made by this company, so give these wines a try. The grapes are from the famed Niagara area, the maple syrup is made by the owner, and synergisticly you get unique sippers. These are not as sweet as ice wine - and have a nice acidic balance. The welcome is genuine, the tastes are varied, and we left with a few bottles to try. Unique and wonderful stop! (Our faves were the iced apple, cassis and golden maple - the prices are reasonable and there are two sizes of many wines.)

Arrived there before noon on a Saturday morning and my wife and I were greeted by the nice couple that operate the winery/gift shop. Very quant spot, clean and friendly. This was our first time at a winery and very impressed with the setup and information we learned about the unique wines they offer. If you are travelling to Haliburton, suggest you don't miss this place.

When we arrived there was a group ahead of us tasting wine. So while we waited one of the owners answered our questions. When we were ready for tasting the owner proceeded to explain the history of maple wine. The information was helpful and we began the tasting. Don't think sweet when tasting the wine. The maple syrup is used by the yeast. The wines tasted very good and our favourite was the cassis wine. We tasted quite a few wines (at no charge) and then bought 5 bottles. When we get back in the area this will definitely be a repeat spot to visit.

While on vacation, we always enjoy visiting new wineries, especially those offering something unique such as this one featuring maple flavours. Our group had fun sampling their various wines (no cost) which ranged from dry to very sweet....something to please everyone. All of us bought several bottles to take home as gifts/souvenirs as well as for ourselves. There's also a gift shop inside called "Maple Moon" which had reasonably-priced home décor items and maple syrup products. If you're in the Haliburton area, you should check this place out.

If you are visiting Haliburton it is worth a visit to Moon Shadows Estate Winery, Ontario's 1st Maple Winery! There is a gift shop inside as well as a wine tasting bar where you can sample various fruit wines that are maple based. Very inviting and welcoming with some truly great wines for the wine lover. We were up there in October after Thanksgiving this year and when most of our plans got rained out we did a search to see what was in the area and found this little gem. Ended up buying quite a few bottles and look forward to returning again!
