We were 2 couples on Paul Gauguin Cruise to Marquese Islands and Society Islands. A lot of times, it was difiicult to do our own tour since there were not a lot of options in those islands. However, I was fortunate enough to find Richard Deane who is the owner and guide for Temarama Tour in Nuku Hiva. I contacted one of his past clients and she spoke highly of him. We booked a tour with Richard and we had the best time of our lives. He was a fantastic guide, giving us an insight into life on the islands. He was knowlegable and very pleasant. You simply cannot go wrong by booking with Richard. His email address is temarama.tour@hotmail.fr or simply google him on the web. Sometimes, it takes a day or so for him to respond. I highly recommend his tour!

As a shore excursion on Nuku Hiva, we booked the half day island tour with Richard. He answered all our emails promptly and we were comfortable that we were dealing with a very reputable guide. There were another 22 people from our cruise ship who had also booked the tour. Richard was waiting for us at the dock. He had a sign with our names on it and he was easy to find. He waited for everybody on his list. He had arranged small 4x4 trucks with drivers to take us around the island. The trucks were in good operating condition and the drivers were very good, safe drivers. Our driver spoke very little english but was very polite. There were 4 people plus the driver in each truck. This meant that all the people in the back seat were crowded and the person in the middle was the most uncomfortable. This is the reason why I rated the tour "Very Good" instead of "Excellent". I would take the tour again but I'd throw politeness out the window and be one of the people who rushed to grab the front seat. We made several stops on the island where Richard would explain the history and points of interest. We could always hear what he was saying and he speaks excellent english. He is very interesting, humorous, and knowledgeable about Nuku Hiva. I think it's a beautiful island and one of the most interesting in Polynesia. At the Kamuihei archeological site, Richard did a performance of a historical dance. It was great. Even though there were several tours on the same day, the tour operators arranged it so that the tours didn't generally stop at the same places at the same time. The exception was Kamuihei but even there the site didn't feel crowded.I watched several other tours that made that same stop and I think Richard's was better. Richard's tour was reasonably priced and excellent value. I would book a tour with him again.

We booked a half day tour with Richard Dean and it was just awesome! He picked us up from the dock of our cruise ship and took us around the island in his comfortable 4x4. Richard was an amazing wealth of knowledge about the island and the history of his people. The four hour tour was filled with really interesting and unique experiences and Richard managed to drive us over much of the island. We even visited a 600 year old archeological site complete with a bone pit! From beginning to end this was a first rate tour. He even stopped for sunscreen and drove us to a nice restaurant for lunch after the tour. Amazingly Richard speaks four languages and is one of the only English speaking guides on the island.
