Nestled about 5km from Burnie CBD this picturesque reserve deserves a visit. Time it right & you will see platypus, dozens of species of bird life along with other natural wildlife.A great place to BBQ (clean electric on site bbq's) or just chill out on the river bank.

What a lovely and tranquil hideaway, great walking track, viewing platform to look for the elusive platypus , great place for a picnic. Just a short drive from Burnie.

A lovely, peaceful natural setting that features BBQ facilities, grassed picnic areas to relax and enjoy, all just a 10 minute drive from the heart of Burnie. And if you are lucky you will see a platypus swimming near the grassy banks. A great little fishing spot to try your luck.

It's a lovely place all year round but dress for the seasons. There is a little walking track and you can see platypus at dawn and dusk.Take proper footwear although it's not too hard it gets muddy/dusty depending on the season. Take your time and just explore. There are a few places for picnics and some BBQ areas also.

The Visitor Information Centre at Burnie suggested we have a look.It seems like another world but only a few minutes from town.Very quiet and peaceful. We were fortunate to see a platypus swimming in the river and observed it for some time. Good walking paths.

A known place to seek platypus in the wild. We didn't see one this trip, but still remember how special it was 10 years ago, when we did see a platypus swim up and down the creek for over an hour! There is a really nice walk, which also had a rider using the path. We found 2 local wildlife animals feeding right beside the path on our return. Good parking, picnic tables and restroom facilities.

I found online that this trail was a 3K walk, but at the end of 500m, it seemed to just end. Also, there is a claim that platypus sightings are possible. We later learned that platypus are more dawn/dusk animals, so if you want a chance to see this animal, plan your stop accordingly. An easy walk, but nothing spectacular.

This place is magical. My strong recommendation is to take a picnic dinner and make an evening of it as it's so peaceful. Breakfast might be good too- an hour after day break . Try not to rush it and expect to see a platypus straight up- although you may! I walked the length of the path and after about 30mins I saw a platypus! It only gets more beautiful the further up the path you go. There are some platforms to stand on too. I was there in mid jan from around 7pm till 8pm which worked well. I think I would have seen more if I'd stayed till 9pm-dark. 5.30 pm was suggested as a good time but I think closer to 'dusk' worked well for me. Overcast days are better too apparently. There is room for kids to play in around the giant ferns. A hidden gem!

This is one of Tasmania's 60 Great Short Walks and takes you along the bank of the Emu River not far from the centre of Burnie. The sign says, "Quiet observers often see platypus from the picnic area". We tried to be very quiet but unfortunately didn't see any.The walk is not far from the site of the old Paper Mill but you would have no idea of this when you do the walk. The tree ferns are amazing here!
