It was 35 degrees in Narrabri as we drove up the winding road towards the top of Mt Kaputar National Park. Now we were amongst cool Mountain and Snow gums with spectacular views across the surrounding plains. With lots of short walks to various lookouts there was never a dull moment. Kangaroos, Brush tail wallabies, Wedge tailed eagles, and a variety of parrots provided entertainment as we walked through the forest. There were two camping grounds to choose from and three cabins run by National Parks. As the sun set in the west we gathered at the Mt Kaputar summit and watched the sky turn a brilliant red then darken after an excellent day of exploring the park.

This park is located about 40km out of Narrabri. Nothing interesting to see on the way there.Once there you enter onto a really narrow road that leads you into the park. And by narrow I mean narrow. The speed limit is 40km/hr -you'd be stupid to go any faster. The road is too tight, and turns with low visibility. The road is about 50% gravel 50% tar.Anyways there are plenty of lookouts in the park and plenty of walking tracks to keep you busy for days. And there's so many great lookouts throughout the park that give you stunning views of not only the park - but the state itself. You can see for miles and miles.The park is teeming with wildlife. I saw so many different birds, kangaroos, wallabies-even goats! Stay on the paths though. I wandered off to explore a rocky outcrop in the late evening and never found the track again and ended up stranded on top of that same bloody outcrop for the whole night in only a t shirt and shorts without a phone. And the temperature drops dramatically in this park. From a high of 33C that day it was below 20 that night at least that's how it felt up there. Be safe and don't be stupid like me. I'm still surprised I didn't die up there.

Fantastic hike trails for both young and old. Short and long walks. Cabins beautifully designed - fit nicely into the National Park environment. Great amenities and the campsites are well spaced and clean.

The road up while mostly sealed has a short part of dirt road. The views from the many lookouts are unsurpassed and we saw it on a cloudy day, yet could make out the Warrumbungles near the horizon!! I would love to see it on a fine day!!!At Mt Kaputar you can search for the rare giant pink slugs- they are real, grow up to 20cm in length and are Fluro pink!!!3 Cabins are there - they look pretty good from the outside save you coming and going up the mountain. There's a road we didn't get to travel that is for serious 4x4 driving (our car is only an all-wheels drive so we didn't bother checking it out - but I'd love to return and give it a go).

Excellent park with fantastic views on a clear day. Usually a few degrees cooler than at Narrabri. Fabulous facilities and lots of great walks

This national park is the site of a 20 million year old volcano and the walks to several peaks are spectacular. It is about 40km off the main highway so some time and effort is needed to get there. I particularly recommend Waa Gorge and the 1500 metre high Mt Kaputar (which you can drive to). It has very interesting native flora and fauna as well as geological landforms.

Who doesn't love a National Park? This place is tranquil and gorgeous, the lookout areas are plentiful and the view will never cease to impress. Great camping and BBQ areas. A must see if you are heading inland.

Mt Kaputar National Park is well worth the drive and visit too. The park is maintained to a high standard. We have stayed twice at the Dawson Springs Cabins in winter. The cabins are basic but have everything you need for your stay. The wood fire comes in handy and warms the cabin up nicely. We have done various walks on well set out tracks gaining access to some of the most amazing views possible. As previously noted we stay in winter and it feels as if you have the place to your own. Nothing beats a good few hour stroll, returning to a warm cabin as the coals glow, having a nice shower and then enjoying a few nice red wines whilst watching the sun go down and the mist settle in. Highly recommended and we will be back again next year.

We came to Mt Kaputar after camping in the Pilliga Scrub, so the height and range of views from the walks were a fine contrast. We stayed at Bark Hut Campground in our camper trailer for three nights. Facilities were excellent, good hot showers and barbecues, and campfires near the campsite. Steep one-lane road up, not possible for caravans, but wonderful walks to lookouts and views. More variety than we'd expected on the walks, with lava flows flows on Lindsay Rock Top Walk, clambering to the top of The Governor. Fantastic variety of vegetation and lots and lots of birds. Worth the long high drive for the beautiful views and peace and quiet.

There are a lot of walks for all levels of fitness. Great views over the plains and wonderful varied vegetation on all the walks. If you are fit a walk to the waterfall will not disappoint . This is a good place to camp or just picnic. The cabins are a great place to stay if you want a bit more comfort. A great place to escape the heat on the plains.

My wife and I had visited Mt Kaputar twice before we had children, once as a day trip and once camping over night. We went up Mt Kaputar as a family at the start of July this year intending to do a couple of short walks at the top. However, when we got up the top it was cold, windy, foggy and snowing. We didn't mind this a bit as it was our kids first experience of snow. Despite not being able to see the fantastic views we had a great time. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour to get here from Narrabri, but it is well worth the drive. On a clear day the views stretch on forever.

The park is beautiful, amazing views and enough short walks to keep a child occupied. The drive up is not for the fainthearted - mostly single lane with a big drop off the side

It started at 14 degrees on the base of the Mt before we started our climb, part bitumn and part dirt...as we climb the temp changed from 14 to 8, then 5, then 3, then 0 when we spotted a vehicle coming the opposite way with snow all over it. We kept going till we got to the top and ran into SNOW!! They have cabins you can hire from the National parks and they and the owners cars were covered in snow....so pretty and peaceful...a real wonder!

We both enjoyed the drive out to and up Mt Kaputar, with scenic views all the way. With the height of the mountain it provided nice relief from the heat of NSW Plains. I imagine though it could be freezing in winter. A highlight was dropping in to the Mt Kaputar beekeeper where you can buy cheap honey direct and pay for it using the "honour system". I love country people and their values. The beekeeper is about 25km out from Narrabri, turn right after creek bridge crossing and short drive. Enjoy
