Geelong is a provincial city but this gallery has an excellent collection, particularly of early Australian art. The GM is very helpful and happy to guide and interact. City Central with a green park next door. Recommended

Thoughtful arrangement juxtaposing older and contemporary paintings. Colonial furniture gives the space extra interest.

It was a truly lovely Gallery where old meets new and had a great Contemporary Art show on offer. It even had a Margaret Preston painting on Loan.Great Gallery to visit.

Access to the gallery is via Little Malop St which is an unimposing entrance for the grand building which houses the gallery. There is a small gift shop area and reception and then a number of rooms on 2 levels. On the lower level is a room filled with exquisite Belleek pottery which was gifted to the gallery. On the main level there are a number of older paintings by some of Australia's most well known artists such as McCubbin and Streeton. What we enjoyed most were the modern paintings which had won art competitions in recent years, plus the 2014 contemporary art exhibition of paintings which were on loan from various Australian artists and commercial galleries. A visit will only take about 30 minutes and with free entry for all it is a 'must see' for any visitor to Geelong.

Great place to visit. Display changes on a regular basis and it costs nothing to enter. Not only has pictures hanging on walls but also has old objects. I.e. Plates, vases, etc. in lower of gallery.

A number of the paintings chronicle the colony of Geelong into its contemporary visage.Plus a small collection of modern art and usually a visiting show.Well worth a visit.

First up - the gallery entrance fee is free. This is an impressive building set in a park next to the Geelong Town Hall. Parts of the Gallery are currently being renovated and hence some of the collection is not on view. The current special exhibition is a series of quite angry and confronting paintings by aboriginal artist Brian McKinnon. His message is strong and quite bleak about the treatment of aboriginal people since colonisation in 1776. His message is rather starker than that delivered by Pat Dodson on TV on Wednesday night. The permanent collection contains some real gems including paintings from Heidelberg School favourites like Streeton, McCubbin and others. Also some early landscapes of the Geelong region by von Gerard. These are quite compelling because they show a landscape of rolling plains and trees. Of real interest is the view one has of the Barwon River with relatively few trees along its banks - rather a stark contrast to the environmental engineering that is happening along the river at present with large plantings of native and indigenous trees that seem to be out of character with what one can see in the von Gerard paintings.A word of waring = if you are a stranger to Geelong and you type in the address Lt Malop Styreet into your Smartphone do not be surprised if you get lost on the way. The real address is 55 Little Malop Street. Parking around the precinct is difficult and during the week cost $2 per hour.(free at weekends). The collection is not large and can be viewed comfortably in about an hour and a half.As an assessment it is a nice regional gallery but falls well short of the Bendigo Gallery as an experience

nice and spacious and natrual light. But there wern't nearly enough art to look at. Some of the paintings I like and if your looking for somthing in particular staff wern't all that hopeful. Would be better if they expanded and put more art works in it, Okay maby I'm being a critic , but would have like to see more

It's nice to walk into a gallery that's free & wander around enjoying the diverse mix of paintings, sculptures, ceramics etc with a local accent to a lot of the exhibitions

Very good representative range of paintings from Colonial, with von Guerard's "view of Geelong", the Heidelberg School with McCubbins "Ä bush burial" to modern Australian with an excellent John Brack. The Gallery also has a 1st class sculpture collection which is displayed from time to time.

Where do you start. A superb building, its exhibitions wonderfully curated. I always visit for the von Geurards. Worth the visit alone. Current exhibitions excellent. Make it a must when in Geelong.

The Geelong Art Gallery just keeps getting better. New works from the permanent collection have been put on display. Wonderful examples of Australian Art and the Heidelberg School. Beautiful glass and porcelain. I puchased a hand made salt dish with plate and spoon from the shop; the china slightly rough to touch and so translucent. Just gorgeous. I also bought a carafe for a gift and it is unique. It's always peaceful and the staff are lovely. I wish there was a restaurant there with a view over Johnstone Park. So lovely on a summers day.

I love our Gallery, we have so many important works of art on display. You must visit to see Arthur Streeton's Ocean Blue it is my favourite painting in the gallery. Other important works include Eugen Von Guerard's View of Geelong, Fred McCubbin's Bush Burial. I love the current exhibition which focuses on Geelong. There is print exhibition coming up which I looking forward to seeing, especially the works of local Joel Wolter. May sure you visit all rooms including downstair which often has displays of ceramics and potter.

Enjoyed a trip to the gallery. A lot of art representing Geelong throughout it growth and development. Art from the Heidelburg school, von Guerard, Bunney, Buvelot appealed to me most. Excellent display of porcelain. Nice staff.
