Take a taxi from Oviedo and even though you may not be allowed inside, the best part is actually the grounds you should be able to walk around in to enjoy the view of the surrounding area...then walk back down to Av. Poblado...

This place was really a surprise, after walking the areas of Medellin, inhaling the Colombian spirit, I found myself entering this place.First, it has "Gardens", not sure if gardens is the right word to describe it - but some plants. Truly, I was expecting more. Then, you head to the main building, it looks like a Middle Ages castle, it's beautiful from the outside. There are fountains and water around. Looks amazing. In addition, on the front porch of this building there's a great view of the entire Medellin valley, something you couldn't see before, walking inside the city.Inside, there's a museum. not big, and due to strict policy where no self-explore is allowed and you have to wait for the guided tours. We decided to skip.I have to mention the cafeteria there, located in a small shed, looks like a 50's little house, with a lady serving. It looks so nice and comfy. The prices to enter are about 3-6$ (including the museum).

We went with friends who love museum visits. We enjoyed a self-guided garden tour, with glorious amaryllis plantings in full bloom, and eating mangosteens under a shady tree. Much of the formal garden layout looked tired and forgotten. We saw a number of really pretty picnics set up beside the castle, on the shaded lawns, with hay bales around them. The bales had gaily colored cloths over them, with jars of bright, fresh flowers. Apparently people had paid for the castle caterers to organize these celebrations and provide food as well. This seems like a very good use for the grassy grounds beside the castle. We had to check all bags at the entrance, I guess because of the number of small trinkets we would soon see, and perhaps covet. The castle tour was entirely in high-speed Spanish, so I missed 99% of what was said. But what I gleaned from others was that she was telling everyone how expensive and exclusive were all the dust-collecting trinkets, furnishings, paintings, chandeliers and other egregious proofs of old money in the hands of those who never had to work for it.One thing that puzzled me: why were the floors all creaking wood, instead of the delightful, clean, silent terrazzo I see in many other buildings in Medellín?Another question: why the extensive collection of crack pipes in the master bedroom dressing room? There were several outdoor decks with great views of the city and neighborhood. Damaged concrete and tiles showed the need for more care in maintenance. The sheer square footage of the castle was impressive, in a way, but it reminded me of how little space and opulence it takes to live abundantly if we have a thankful heart.Visit at your own risk.

We had no idea what to expect going into this museum, and we're so pleased that we took the time. If you are staying in Poblado anyway, it is only about a 15 minute walk from Santa Fe Shopping Center (uphill, much easier on the way back!), and it is so full of little treasures from that time period, furniture, paintings, lamps etc. We very much enjoyed the tour, although it was mostly in Spanish. Our guide made sure we noticed little details and she was very knowledgeable. If you don't speak Spanish, be sure to grab an English brochure from the reception desk, as it explains everything the guide is saying quite well. It is a shame the fountains were not working, as that would have made for beautiful photos.

The castle is surrounded with beautifuls gardens. Although the fountains did not work, it should be a sober sight. Thuth being told it is beautiful but there is not to much to see. We made the guided visit to the castle and it is interesting to see the history of an upper class "paisa" family and how things always can told a history. Also I acknowledge that you can picnic at the site and it looked pretty cool, but you have to order the picnic with anticipation and select from a variety of menus. Overall it was fun. The entry of an adult costs approx. US$5, so it is worth it for the money. Picnics of course have a different value but I can not tell how much, but I believe it is not expensive.

This place is hilarious!! Dirty , unkept and the gardens are very very sad looking. The guide took us around the strange "castle" without explaining a thing and then left !!! Please do not waste your time . The pics are not how this place is now....

This is a wonderful place to visit! I love the gardens and history of the home. The tour inside was great but I feel like there was to many people at one time on the tour is was very crowded. I think it is a must see.

The castle is pretty and offers a great view is the surrounding area. The tour is guided. My guide was unenthusiastic at best. It's December and the house is beautifully decorated, plus there is a nativity exhibition. 10.000 pesos, worth an hour.

Water fountains, small towers, a gorgeous wooden library/office, beautiful Mediterranean-style tiles in an area that gives out to a patio, large windows to be able to appreciate the view of the city, an impressive entrance, tree-lined walkways with moss hanging from them, their little girls' room full of ceramic dolls, etc. Some reviews (ahem from guys) say "why would I want to visit some other guys' eccentric house, it's not even a real castle". Well, if you're a romantic or just someone for whom environment really makes a difference, it's just a beautiful spot with relatively ample grounds in the middle of Medellín where houses are normally built with contingent walls.

The castle is a museum of the owner, who brought art and architecture from Europe. The gardens have fountains and variety of flowers. The castle is impressive for the town but needs more maintenance. It's a nice way to spend a day

The entrance looked like of a haunted castle and I thought it was really cool. Inside the museum we were guided through the residence and for me what it was great is to imagine how this people lived. They had impressive collections but what I liked the most was Isolda's ( their daughter) bedroom when she was a kid. all those dolls and drawings could be definitely a plot for a scary movie! :) ( Maybe it was just me thinking of that but it felt like all the old dolls were looking at me :D ) The library was also really cool with one of the best views Anyway, for those who like history it's worth to see an old style little castle

Not worth it. No way this should be called a castle. It is a pleasant home and large garden but that is it. If you want to see how the former owners lived 50 years ago maybe it is worthwhile. I attended the Spanish only tour and had an English speaker translate for me. Do this only if you have done everything else in Medellin and want to spend 1.5 hours looking at someone else's house.

I agree with other reviewers, although it is not a castle in the European sense of the word. It is for Colombian standards. El Castillo is a wonderful place to enjoy Medellin's lovely weather. A picnic on the grounds is a great plan. You can pay just to enter the grounds or to be able to see the interior which features different exhibits. The Nativity set exhibit is especially nice.
