Really enjoyed spending time in this area. It's a lot more vibrant than the main Old Town. At night, you can grab a beer and street food and chat away to the locals whilst watching musicians or local kids playing football. The church was dilapidated but still very beautiful. It's a lot more real than the rest of the touristy parts of the city. Lovely.Check out our blog for more tips on Cartagena: https://ednaventures.wordpress.com/2014/11/05/cartagena-de-indias-fire-mud-tv-in-a-bin-bag/

I enjoyed walking around, watching people and just the life there at NIGHT. The Rests. in the area are good, and good prices, you can sit outside, no fancy, but very good. I wish the one called "Demente" would have outside tables, but they don't. I rather go to the ones with tables outside (my preference),

We spent many nights in this area having drinks or just walking around. There was always people and musicians hanging out here and it has a very lively atmosphere. We only wish that our town had somewhere like this to hang out at every night.

I disagree with the review about "not going there after dark". We are two white Americans in a sea of Columbians and possibly other tourists. We went out in that area every night. This place was hopping with the local culture. We saw one mass which the participants all had lit candles. The streets outside are full of families, singles, couples, dogs, singers, food, drinks... You name it.

This church is set in what looks to be the working-class district of Cartagena. There are lively cafés and the plaza in front of the church is alive with performers in the evenings. Not a place I'd want to be after dark, but plenty of security and police roaming the area throughout the day.

This place is amazing - it is a square outside a church with lots going on. Mariachi bands, a pop up cocktail bar and people just hanging out. So much fun.

We visited this based on tripadvisor ratings. The inside was not open when we arrived. We snapped some pics of the outside (which is pretty impressive) and then walked over to the Walled City.

This crumbling barrio is definitely on the upswing and is anchored by this church where I enjoyed a marching band competition one night, which even got some people on their feet to dance. The church was a wonderful backdrop for the event.

The church itself didn't seem to be open when I visited, but still a pretty exterior worthy of a few photos. Good light in the morning.

Sat at the square and saw families playing and street performers practicing their acts. Multiple food vendors and very casual atmosphere. No one constantly trying to sell you something. Music wafting everywhere.

its the bussiest area in the city now. it was 1 min from casa lola, our hotel, and bursting with people every day. you get good dinning deals arround the area. good food for half the price of other areas.

Frequented by locals, travelers, hippies, families and everyone in between. Great street food all around, cheap drinks and plenty of people to meet and socialize with. Went here a couple of nights on our brief stay in Cartagena and suggest you do as well.

The plaza right next to the church is a lovely place to hang out at night. There's lots of food and drink carts, a few restaurants and bars, people are out eating and socializing, kids are playing, you might find people out singing or playing their instruments. It's a great place for people watching and chatting with new friends. It's mostly locals that hang out here, but there's a large amount of tourists as well. People hang out all night into the wee hours so if you're not ready to head back to your hostel or hotel, you won't be alone. Police regularly patrol the area so it felt pretty safe. My first night was Sunday, and there was a huge Zumba class with at least 200 people. If I'm not mistaken, this was a weekly event here, not a one time thing. My hotel was a 2 minute walk away and I absolutely loved spending my evenings in the square during my trip.

Pretty Plaza de la Trinidad is a no-miss. It is a real town square where folks gather in the evening and talk, eat street food and go to church. There are several chic restaurants around the square - we ate at many of them - and they were all good/great. There is even a Champagne bar that serves tapas. Or just act like a local and get a beer and chicken on a stick. Can't miss it, it is in the center of Getsamani. The art in that area is wonderful also.

I stumbled across this place when going to a restaurant in the area. I was lucky enough to get in on a musical festival showcasing Caribbean music and dance. I had a real good time. As far as I could tell this is a place where the local goes. Plenty of restaurants in the area. Demente being the diamond, and as such quite expensive.
