This plaza has a beautiful Botero statue to greet you. The plaza is surrounded by lovely cobblestone lined streets with bouganvillea spilling over balconies. The quality of light midday is suitable for the most discerning artist. We took lunch at an outdoor cafe on the Plaza and enjoyed a huge platter of calimari, mussels and prawns. The beer was ice cold and delicious and mellowed out the day for us. Unfortunately, the hawkers are constantly in your face with Chinese made goods, making a peaceful time impossible. We happened to have been taken by an unscrupulous taxi driver, who pressure us for more money than originally agreed upon. I am sensitive to the vibes of people, and I felt strongly that Columbians in general were not fond of Americans. We then travelled to Santa Marta, Columbia and the vibe was much more positive than Cartagena.

The Plaza Santo Domingo gets quite crowded in the evenings as it is surrounded by many different restaurants and bars. Visitors have ample choices of food and drink. Some evenings it can be quite touristy. I liked the lively atmosphere and enjoyed walking around and people watching. I did not like being pressed by street vendors or restaurant hosts. Still it is a place to visit and get a feel of the local life.

A bustling square and a great place to enjoy a sociable, people watch and take in some local music. You will have many local vendors vying for your interest and ample opportunity, should you wish, to pay a street musician for an more intimate and direct show. Surrounded by many historic and traditional buildings this square is a perfect stopping point.

In the afternoon you can feel the old city, quiet, relaxing while enjoying some food, at night a lot of people walking around, having dinner enjoying music from the pubs or restaurants.

Nice plaza and shopping and restaurant area to eat or to have a drink in the Old Section of Cartagena

This is the great hangout for afterhours drinks and pizzas etc.Lots of outdoor pubs to choose from, there all about the same.Roaming vendors, singers and sideshow approach your table for offers. It is very informal and can get loud and fiesty, plan ahead and have fun.

We went here on a Sunday afternoon, so the town was generally quieter as most shops were closed. This is quite a central part of the town so we were inundated with hawkers when we reached this square (probably exaggerated as there were less tourists around) but it's all part of the experience and you need to remember everyone's just trying to make a living. Good spot with lots of dining and the church to wander into as well.

You will feel transported in time. Best time is at night when it is cooler. Have a very good Colombian beer and just watch people passing by

The atmosphere here is good at night so I would recommend having dinner here. There is also a Botero statue. The Santo Domingo church may be open if you are lucky.

Lively and charming with musicians playing beautiful music. Good restaurants with plenty of outdoor seating. Very safe

Go early morning to get great photos without tons of people and terrific light on the Santo Domingo church. Go later in the day for wonderful photos of people dining in the square and locals working hard to make a living selling handmade goods.

We stayed a block away from this Plaza and it was our favorite spot for watching people and the many horse-drawn carriages. Lots of musicians, vendors and restaurants although the food wasn't very exciting.

Here you'll see lots of vendors. There is an outside dining area where you can relax and people watch. All the people I spoke with were very friendly. Definitely a place to catch your breathe and have a drink, or even a bite if your heart desires.
