The Punihill Penguin colony and the Chilean National Park were near the end of 10 days of riding through Patagonia staying at local inns and dining at local restaurants. The dinner at El Gato in Peurto Varas was some of the best fish I've ever had. Lots of hills but the 10 mile grade over the Andes was a steady 3% and the other hills were almost all under a half mile. The ride attracts a more interesting and adventurous riding companions; they were great company. Juan Pablo Espinosa and Pablito with Experience Plus made everything very easy for us. Beautiful scenery, penguins, and good pavement. This is trip that is well worth the time and money.

We took both hikes--through the forest and through the dunes--plus stops at the museum and the visitor center. All of this took about 4 hours. It is a beautiful place. We had great weather. With clear views and sunshine. It looked like they were set up for these hikes to be quite wet and boggy.

I was a bit taken aback when I read the other reviews of this park as I don't think it does it justice. As others mentioned, the park has a number of hiking trails that are well marked, with boardwalks and plaques with information on fauna. The trails are relatively easy-going - 45 min to 1 hour loops, at most - and we had no issues doing the hikes with our three kids, so it is definitely geared to people of all physical abilities. For a Chilean national park, this park has a lot of infrastructure - places to eat, some small museums, camping, etc. - which makes it an easy visit for most people. The beach (which you can either walk to or drive to - we drove as it was too far for the kids to walk) is next to a native reserve and was amazing. It is extremely wide, clean and wild - we had a wonderful picnic there. What was even better than both the hiking trails and the beach was a nearby fossil beach. Instead of turning right from the main road to get to the national park, take a left and follow the road to the VERY END. I mean the very end of the road!!! You will think you're going the wrong way as the road turns into a pretty rough track (4x4 vehicle is a must), and ends at a fence. On closer inspection the fence is actually a gate that can be opened, and is only there to keep the horses in the fields. Go through the gate, across the fields and follow the marked trails towards the ocean (about 30-45 min of easy hiking), where you will end up at a beautiful rock beach covered in fossils. The fossils are mostly shells, but we also found some plant and fish fossils. There were also two mysterious memorials there from 1960 and 2010, likely from tsunamis that followed the big earthquakes that happened in those years. The place was deserted, even at high season - we only saw one family that was returning with their gear after a camping trip there. The river that meets the ocean at this beach seems to be full of large fish. Definitely a must see! Our kids were thrilled by the hike and the fossils, and it was truly off the beaten track which made it even better!

We have been on the national parc few days cause we were thinking there r a lot to visit and different walk but we didn't have any information about the visit, every day they just told us about the small walk ( 30 to 45 min around the camping ) and the last day someone told us there is bigger walk, a bit angry about the information they gave us also camping it's a bit expensive for the facilities we have .

We visited Chiloe National Park for one day and it was simply not enough. The brief interlude gave us a taste of what lies ahead... The small walks at the entrance to the park are scenic but geared towards families, children and the elderly. These are easy and well maintained. I regret that I did not have the opportunity to do some serious exploring. The beach on the west of the national park is also fairly amazing. One needs at least three days to do this area any justice... (camping in the park would probably be best).

The park is kept in good condition, and the workers we talked to are helpful and friendly. The trails are more nature trails, than hiking trails. They let you see a variety of the plant and bird life within a fairly short distance. We did not take the beach trail in the park, but accidentally wound up on a nearby beach in our car (getting lost before we found the park entrance).....quite a dramatic sight!

If u like nature and trekking u will like this place. U can arrive there by bus that leave u in the entrance of the park (they pass with frequency). U have to pay a ticket for 3 dolars adults aprox and it last all day i think. The roads are not hard so u just will need confortable tennis and sport clothes (sun block is important because uv radiation is really high, and a hat if it is sunny, in winter i dont know maybe because of the rain probably waterproof clothes) and bring food and water from the supermarket in the cities because there it is a bit expensive .biologist or lovers of the nature will love this place because of the biodiversity that u can see in the diferents landscapes along the roads and how they can completely change in just a few metros. Inside of the park there is a restorant if u want to eat. Besides they rent kayak and houses, and camping spaces. Inside of the park there is no trash can.

As far as national parks in Chile go, the easily accessible portion of this one (the south entrance) is nothing to write home about. It has some very short, tame, walking trails and the sights aren't really that compelling. Chiloe is a place to relax, eat seafood, and enjoy the ambience. If you're bored, this park might be worth a trip. I definitely wouldn't pay for a tour here. On the positive side, you won't need hiking boots, trail food, water, walking sticks, or any of that trekking stuff. We drove past the park until we found a little parking area at the beach couple of kilometers up the road. The beach walk was much better than the park.

Everything was wonderful the day we visited. The park was well maintained. The staff courteous and friendly even though we don't speak Spanish. Wonderful example of the local floral and fauna. Great hiking experience in Chiloe!

Nice place to get to know the island better. Easy flat trails for the uninitiated. Good facilities. If you love the island of Chiloe, you should get to see this spot.
