Very interesting and strange place. It is a relatively small area, about 15 km. x 3 km., but when you are inside and do not see either the seaside or the nearby hills, it feels really awkward and one can imagine being in Saharan desert. You must have a 4 x 4 vehicle, otherwise it is almost no fun.

Putu belongs to the Region of Maule in Chile. This region is known for its wine and fruits. Along with the gastronomic delicacies, Sand Dunes stands as monumental attraction for the sports buddies. The coastal areas were very badly damaged during the last earthquake and Tsunami but there stands the Sand Dunes as a monument inviting the travellers to contemplate nature's gift to this region. Its a rare beauty worth visiting with friends and family...

If you have a parchant to see to the destruction of a pristine environment which by all rights should be a Chilean national reserve, then you can not go far wrong than visiting Putu Dunes. From what could be a fabulous tourism and wild life resource of a Hundred plus hectares, of a imposing sand dune complex, with lagoons rich in bird life, over the years has descended into a play ground of noisy 4x4 vehicles and off road motorbikes, often driven by drunken drivers (so walkers must take care) carving up and down the dunes at alarming speeds. What was once a beautiful coast and shingle beach dotted with fishing boats has now been turned into an illegal open cast quarry, crowded with heavy earth moving equipment and constant lorry movements Most of the bird life has abandoned the lagoons as they are close to the access road to the site which is now a rat run for large trucks servicing the quarry. Before the tsunami in 2010 I would have highly recommend Putu Dunes, the tsunami did deposit some trash onto the site, but that could have easily been cleaned with a consented effort, instead the authorities effectively abandoned the site leaving it degenerate into that state it has become today,. .

We would never have found the southern parts of them if it wasn't for our guide. The walk was amazing and I have never been so dirty after trekking but it was so worth the while. The moon landscape of the dune and the greatness off the Pacific Ocean is something I will remeber my whole life.

The Putu Sand Dunes near Constitucion, Chile are lovely and so alive with wildlife and natural conditions: clean air, moisture, plenty of room for relaxing/recreating. And, for those of us who enjoy sand between our toes, a barefoot walk in the dunes is just the thing. The dunes are easy to reach, just north of Constitucion on the coast, and by a paved highway.

...hard to find from Putu itself. Views from dunes good, although a fair walk to see a lot of them. Maybe best going guided to avoid missing them / the best spots.
