This churches situated nearby most famous Alexander Nevsky church. Very old building with ancient brickwork, when I entered really I astonished by the historical wall paintings etc. Worth a visit if anyone like to see the ancient values of Sofia.

the oldest acting church in Europe- wow, it is indeed worth to be visited, excellent renovation done, good Sunday service/ unfortunately not comparable with Alexander Nevski/ , go there Saturday afternoon, the atmosphere is magic

I love this church. The place has an amazing spirit. The church is very old and preserved. Beneath it is located a crypt museum, there is shown the history of the church and the remains of the older temples.

In the year of 2004, late in the summer, I went with my coworkers to see The International Civil Engineering Fair, held in bulgarien city Plovdiv on the river Marica. In one of my previous reviews I gave account on this event and hotel I stayed in, at that time. After Plovdiv, on our way back home to Serbia, we visited Sophia, the capital of Republic of Bulgaria.It is very interesting city, with a lot of parks, the broad old cobblestones streets in the old part of the city and also the many of the orthodox churches.I wanted to make acquaintance with the Byzantine pearl of architecture, that is, the Saint Sophia Church, located in Parizh Street, near to the Temple Monument Saint Alexander Nevsky. It is a second oldest church in Sofia, dating to the 6th century. It was built during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I and is a contemporary of famous Hagia Sophia in Constatinople. Inside we had seen many icons,the altar, the rows of tables and benches for believers. The most impressive icon is for sure, the paint that depicts Sophia as Christ Emmanuel, a young figure of Christ seated on arainbow.Seen from outside, it is a typical edifice of the Byzantine era, with the red stones facade, the characteristic roof and domes.

I'm not sure why this church has the name of the city but it's not so great. The history behind it is slightly interesting but it's not open to the public as far as I could tell...

Interesting and historical centre in the city centre. Getting inside make you go back into the centuries. You'll find others Agia Sofia's travelling into Balkans, try to make comparisons. It will help you in finding the differences in the cultures and nationalities in this interesting part of the Europe.

One of the very interesting and old churches in Sofia, which gave the name of the city. Typical basilica architecture.

Above ground there's not a lot to see. I think the whole church was rebuilt in the 30s so it's a pretty soulless affair. The exterior is bland and the interior isn't much more interesting. It's in the shadow of the much larger and fancier Cathedral...but stick with it.Find the stairs to the left of the main entrance and descend into the dimly-lit necropolis. Entrance fee is reasonable and for a curious person you could easily kill an hour wandering around (and over, and under) the pre-Christian and early Christian tombs. English language signage makes it all fairly understandable. A perfectly good use of your time in Sofia.
