For those who are interesting in history of Esterhazy house it is a must (together with the castle in Eisenstadt), for the others nice place which is possible to visit also in winter months (Fri/Sat/Sun). Mobiliary not so rich as it could be, but great impression when entering sala terrena and music hall, they are highlights of the visit. Well renovated courtyard, but the garden needs further improvement - after that this destination will be 5 stars worth (-:

We visited the castle during summer of 2014. I was never here before, so I liked very much the whole renovated projekt. This is a unique place in Hungary, and I hope it will be visited by many and many more hungarian in the future. Probably it will be ready soon, as there are some places in the castle, where not all the details are completed yet.

It is quite a trip to get to this place, you either can combine it with the Esterhazy Palace on the Austrian side and then continue with 2 trains and 1 bus, or you just go from Vienna (or Budapest) by train to Fertoszentmiklos and then walk 3 kilometers. So the actual trip aside it is really a very amazing palace. Most of the rooms are already renovated, while more are listed to be renovated. Astonishing rococo rooms and a large garden. While I was visiting, they had in addition a porcelain collection on display. Tours itself are available in hungarian, english, german. As native german speaker I took the german tour, which was very precise and on the point, so I really enjoyed it. It is allowed to take photographs inside the palace (obviously without flash).

Booked a 3 night luxury 2 bedroom suit for 3 people was around 300 dollars a night it was out of this world experience the only way to get there is by carand even than it's very awkward to get into your rooms as you have to drag your belongings through the castle's garden on your ownNo room service or brekkie here they provide you with a voucher and can use the restaurant opposite the castle on the roadThe food wasn't good at allProbably 1-2 night would be enough to stay here to see the castle and to see how the rich noble people lived in the earlier centuries. The queen bed is nice but the 2 single was a nightmare to sleep onI know a company which takes you there and back for around a 100 dollars which is dirt cheap considering that it's more than 3 hour drive from BudapestIf you interested let me know!So to sum up it's worth the visit despite the mediocre facilities like eating and commuting around the place although they have a bus service that connects to Sopron which is a must see township to visit!

We really enjoyed the guided tour. Our guide really knew everything about the castle, even when we asked some really detailed thing about it. The history of the castle is very interesting and they renovated everything very well. Worth visiting.

Beautiful Rococo palace with peaceful garden to stroll around in a small town of Fertod. The rooms are elegantly decorated, some very interesting pieces of furniture and ceramics on display. The visit is only possible with a guide and although I read that tours are available in different languages (at least in English and German too) we were offered only Hungarian one on the day of our visit. We could read some information in English from the hand-outs but definitely not as much as guide was telling. All in all it is worth visiting, but definitely overpriced for the 1 hour Hungarian only guided tour.

Travelling back from Sopron to Budapest we decided to search out this palace as it in the Rough Guide's Top 17 things to see in Hungary! Wondered why as Hungary has many things to see but we were not disappointed as it is a gorgeous palace. We did not take the tour as it was only in Hungarian bur strolled around the grounds at our leisure.

Small Versailles. Very nice place both inside and outside too. The price is 2500 HUF / person for adults. In recent times, a lot has changed, renovated in and out. I think now one of most beautiful castle in Hungary. Recommended, must see. It was a great experience.

We have enjoyed the visit of he castle, the guide was giving interesting information really. We have extremely enjoyed the music program on Saturday night, do not miss the opportunity to book a musical event in the Marionette Theatre of the Castle. Nagyon élveztük a kastély látogatást, az idegenvezető érdekes információkkal készült. A szombat esti zenei program nagyon színvonalas volt. Mindenképp érdemes a Kastély Marionette színházában egy zenei élményre befoglalni!!

The palace is very nice both from the outside and inside. We didn't visit the gardens but they seem to be well kept. The temporary exhibition about the Esterhazy family is quite good. Most of the rooms are not spectacular but 2 or 3 make it worth to visit. Guided tour only.

2000 HUF/person worth the price. We were there some 10 years ago and it has changed a lot. Realy nice renovation. Apt tour leader (you can only visit with a guide). You get immerged in the world of the noble people what wanted to compete with the Austrian monarchy.

Fertőd is a sleepy little town in the north-western corner of Hungary. So small, it shares a little single-track train station with the next town, Fertőszéplak, complete with an ancient, rusty sign. 1km east of that little station lies this hidden gem, Eszterháza. (You know you're NOT in the wrong place when, just after walking east of the station, you see a stone pillar with "Eszterháza" inscribed on it!)I half-daytripped here from Vienna to fulfil a longtime dream of seeing the place where Joseph Haydn worked for nearly 30 years (a dream of many classical music nuts like myself). In my eyes, it is a great value side trip - the Austrian rail's special "EuRegio" ticket for EUR19 takes you there and back on a direct train from Vienna, and EUR4 gets you entry with a guided tour of the palace. Staff only speak very basic English but that's not really a problem; Hungarian or German (which I speak) work perfectly. Euros are accepted if you don't have Forints. The palace is lovely and very much alive with history. Plenty of nice furniture, paintings and precious homewares to admire. The tour route is well set-up and makes sense. I found the souvenir shop reasonable value, with beautiful postcards of the palace. Extensive restoration works were underway when I visited, so I'll definitely go back someday to see it in its full glory.Granted, there's pretty much nothing to do in Fertod once you're done with the palace. But hey, who doesn't like the novelty of finding yourself in a random place like this and being able to tell people about it when you go home! It provided me with one of those days which makes a vacation all the more memorable.

The palace was modeled of the palace in Versailles. The palace and the surrounding garden is the magnificent though they are still under restoration. The guidance is in several languages and with interesting stories of the Esterhazy family.
