If you don't mind climbing a little bit, Anavarza castle is a wonderful place to visit. Bring some food and water, so that you can spend enough time to visit whole area. You can visit the whole area at least 2 or 3 hours. Climbing to the castle is a little bit difficult but i believe every one can do it. And don't miss the sunset there, the view is wonderful.

The climbing up took us 25 minutes and down 15 minutes.A pleasant hike to do when the sun is not hitting !You should also have good shoes, water and like walking on difficult the paths : the walkway is stony and rocky. Don't be impressed when arriving on then site by the hill which seems too high. Take your time and enjoy.Transport:No direct public transport from AdanaWe rented a taxi for 300 TL to visit Anavarza, Yilanli Castle, Misis and also made a tour in the new side of Adana by the lake.

The incredibly huge area of the ancient city of Anazarbus has not been unearthed yet. Still once you arrive to the ruins (turn right at the village of Aysehoca on the road from Ceyhan to Kadirli), you get the first impression at one of the city gates. A very wide field of unearthed ancient ruins beneath an impressive mountain covered with one of the largest castles I have seen in Anatolia. After enjoying this scene turn right further into to village. After a few hundred metres you will find a small "museum" behind a blue painted gate with beautiful artifacts. Continue from there to a school building to find a large Emperor's gate to the city. Continue to the end of the village (just a few hundred meters). At the right of the road, you can see a huge stadium, the rocks have been "shaved" to make straight walls and some rows for specators caved into it. Across the road you just have to climbe a few meters to have a breathteaking view over the wide space of the ancient city and the castle. Don't miss, if you are in the area!

Anavarza ruins is an amazing place! Just one hour driving from Adana and 30 min from the 'Snake Castle'. We found a caretaker living in the town of Dilikkaya, however very limited English. There some mosaics amazing mosaics at his house. The view from the top is spectacular!

This is a large castle spread out a top a large cliff side mountain. The hike to get up to it is fun, but would be extreme to those who are not in shape. I climbed it with my 2 year old on my back in a mountain climbing backpack! The mountain side has stairs carved into the bedrock leading up to the castle gate entrance. Over the decades and earthquakes some of these stairs have become sporadic and could be a challenging to maneuver! While climbing the hillside you discover it’s also a necropolis and numerous sarcophagus ruins are scattered about. Once inside you see the castle is very spread out. There are numerous chambers to explore, most are dark so bring a flashlight. When we visited there were numerous turtles in these chambers and tiny looking sea shell snails stuck to the grass, which looked like snow! This castle boasts some great photo ops with its length and also has some great detailed carvings to discover. Halfway down the castle you must climb a latter to go further. The trail gets narrow around this area and can be scary with the sheer cliff on one side. Once you pass this obstacle the castle opens up again and there is a lot more to see. But once you reach the next wall it becomes impassable because the castle wall extending behind it is at a lower elevation and perpendicular, unless you have rock climbing gear to scale down the castle walls or climb the cliff side. It looks like you could access the rest of the castle by hiking up the mountain’s backside which has less of an incline? At the foot of the trail is a local who has a shack full of artifacts found within the area, which he loves to show off, and he will also treat you to a glass of Chia. The rest of the village seems friendly and a lot of the homes have ruins or even mosaics located in their backyards. The government allows them to keep the property as long as they leave it open for visitors, and most are more than happy to show off their ‘yard ornaments’. There is a huge gate located in the village with much adorned pillars. Between the cliff and the village is an open field approx. 20 acres which is the ancient city ruins with only a few buildings, walls, and aqueducts still standing. Through the field at the base of the cliff are a couple shallow caves to explore. There is also a large hole in the cliff to climb up to. The climb is steep up huge boulders. But you will find a little hidden ‘garden oasis’ within, complete with trees and a skylight. In the summer this place is hot! We left early in the morning and started our hike at 0800when it was 75degrees, we were done by 1100 just as the temp reached 100degrees!

Anavarza Ruins is absolutely a must visit for all archeology fans. Despite the fact that almost no excavations have started yet, the grandeur of the site is amazing. It could easily be a spot where movies like Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones could have been shot, it's so majestic. It dates back to 19 BC but the castle we see today dates back to 11th century. So, layers of history lay there. As the site is untouched currently, there are nothing to guide you through or no one to give you information, so I recommend you go there with a knowledgeable guide just as we did. The small village next to the ruins is full of houses where in the gardens the remaining columns and even sarcophagus can be seen and people live among them. So, it's a very rare occasion to see history being literally part of daily life. Villagers are very friendy and they are ready to give you information, but of course they speak only Turkish. Make sure you go there towards the sunset: the view of the ruins is spectacular at that hour!!

Wirklich tolle Anlage
