The size of this church is staggering and the interiors were ostentatious and big, but it is worth a visit.

The church was a location in 'The Sound of Music', which means it gets tour groups. Don't let them put you off, though. They don't swamp it, and it's still lovely, particularly inside.

After a pleasant walk we arrived at the Basilica which is in an elevated position on the south side of the former monastery building facing a large square.The beautifully painted yellow walls with white detailing of the twin tower entrance facade of Baroque style is very impressive. On entering the church one encounters a light late Gothic interior with Baroque fittings. The early Baroque high alter in the chancel is over 18m high and there are a further 12 dedicated alters around the nave, side aisles and chapels. These alters are magnificently sculptured with figures, beautifully decorated and each have fine detailed painted central panels. Overall it is well worth a visit when in Mondsee.

We were fortunate to visit St. Michael as part of The Sound of Music tour (it looked larger in the movie). This lovely Basilica is in picturesque Mondsee, about 30 minutes drive from Salzburg. Entry is free and they allowed picture taking so to contribute to the church upkeep, we bought souvenirs at their gift shop. There are free public toilets at the adjoining building, and a sprinkling of small cafes and cake shops nearby. A nice short visit.

We took the Sound of Music tour from Salzburg and found ourselves in some of the most beautiful country ending at this place. As stated it is the church inthe wedding scene of the Sound of Music and we were not disappointed. Though it is not as ornate as some of the big cathedrals, it is beautiful and has a wonderful museum attached. The Baroque alter and the huge pipe organ take you back to the scenes in the movie. The side alters ar also lovely. Be sure to take time to actually read he plaques describing the various parts of the church and relalize the uniqueness of this wonderful building. The bus tour that brought us to the church included a stop at St.Gilgens with a gorgeous view of the lake and also St Wolfgang. A day well spent.

We went there as a part of our personal Sound of Music tour. When we entered (for no fee at all !!!!) we were awestruck and stunned by the beauty and arrangement of everything in the church. It is very well kept and when we visited barely anyone was visiting so we had the church all for ourselves. All the paintings along the aisle all the way down to the altar could be lit up by one push of a button. We have never seen anything like it !! If you love the movie or happen to pass by then you have to go and see it !!

If like us you did not know this was the church the wedding scene from the Sound of Music was filmed in then it is an added plus to your visit to this exceptional basilica. In the year 748, the Bavarian Duke Odilo II founded the monastery Mondsee on the remains of a Roman settlement. Today, sits a late-Gothic church that was consecrated in 1487.St. Michael's Basilica is situated right in the middle of the town centre. It is easy to spot the two fifty two metre high towers of this former Benedictine abbey church anywhere in Mondsee. The Basilica is painted yellow and white and has the figures of Saints Peter and Paul on the façade in contrast to the black and white paving leading up to it gives you stunning picture opportunity. If the outside is impressive then the inside is a must see. Having spent two weeks in Italy and visiting numerous churches, St Michael’s is certainly up there with the best in Italy. Hans Waldburger designed the eighteen metre early Baroque high altar. More altars were built in the monastery church; these included the Holy Spirit Altar, the Wolfgang Altar, the Corpus Christi Altar, the poor soul’s altar, the Sebastian Altar, the altar dedicated to St. Peter Altar. Later, the John altar, the altar Josef, the Anna or Virgin altar and Antonius altar. Each is worth taking time to look at. When up at the high alter it is also worth looking back at the impressive organ pipes at the opposite end of the basilica.The three-aisled Basilica is one of the most prominent, as well as the largest monuments in Austria.In 2005, the former monastery church was made a Minor Basilica by Pope John Paul II.Even if you are not a “movie fan” St Michael’s Basilica is worth spending time walking through. There are also additional artifacts to be viewed as part of the Museum attached to the basilica. Although enetrance to the basilica is free there is a small cost for the museum.

Those interested to see where the wedding from The Sound of Music was shot, don´t miss this place. It is a nice church, well kept, no admission fee, right in the centre of the picturesque town.

This is in the town on Mondsee, were we went on our Sound of Music tour. You may recognize it from the scene in the movie as the church where Maria and the Captian get married. It's a cute but pretty similar to other churches inside. However, I think the outside, with it's bright color and great zig zag sidewalk was more interesting. Don't miss the holy water (with labels) in Jagermister bottles! At $1 each they will be the cheapest souvenirs you ever get!

Best known for the church where the wedding scene was filmed in the Sound of Music and it is a small but beautiful church and well worth the trip from Salzburg.Bus140 runs every 30 minutes (10 and 40 after on the hour) and takes approximately 50 minutes to reach MondseeHighly recommend finding time to go as Mondsee is incredibly picturesque and well worth going to see the church and walk around the small city.

Although not that special-looking from the outside, this church is amazingly beautiful inside with lots of black and gold. Equally beautiful is the organ.

Obviously from the reviews and its ranking as #1 in places to visit in the Mondsee area, this cathedral totally left me paralyzed with awe. It was drop-dead gorgeous. My favorite cathedral during my Austria-Switzerland trip (and we saw a bunch). Ditto the praise and fabulous statements of all the critique makers, so I will add that there are little bottles of holy water that are yours for a contribution. I brought those back to my 40-something year old daughters along with a collection of pictures that I had taken of the cathedral and they were thrilled. Not your usual souvenir from Europe....Be sure to have a coffee on the plaza of Mondsee while you are there. The shopping opportunities here are plentiful and actually not bad, quite different looks from the norm. All in all, Mondsee is a 10+.

The inside of the basilica was quite different from what I was expecting. I expected paintings in pastel on the ceilings and lots of gold but it was completely different. There is lots of black and gold and the effect is really stunning. Entry to the basilica is through a small gift shop which helps the upkeep of the basilica. They had some lovely wooden christmas decorations.A lot of visitors visit because it was used as the church for Maria's wedding in the Sound of Music.

Went on the Sound of Music tour and as this is the church in the wedding scene. Beautiful church and a small charming town. Beautiful here ...

We didn't know in advance that this church was here or that it was cinematically famous, so it was a delightful surprise to come upon it is we walked around this lovely village. We didn't go inside but even just from the outside this is a truly beautiful church. The fresh looking yellow and white paintwork really set off the stunning double towers at the front and the overall effect is magnificent.
