It's a medieval ruins situated right on the top of the hill. There is nothing besides ruins but due to this fact you can see how it was during medieval times...You can feel a spirit of real history there - while walking there it's so easy to imagine knights & battles... Moreover, you'll enjoy wonderful views of surroundings - the Danube river, small towns & hills covered with trees...Visit it - I think you won't be disappointed !!

These castle ruins are situated high above the Danube with fantastic views two ways over the river and the Wachau valley. While they are much like other ruins in many ways there is a small chapel still intact and some other areas not completely ruined. There are numerous steps leading to different areas of the castle and it's actually worthwhile going up all of them for the different views. The trip up to the castle on a steep, winding road is rather interesting as well.

Burgruine Aggstein is a ruined castle at the top of a high hill. It commands views both ways at a strategic bend in the Danube river which used to give the inhabitants control of who passed by on the river. The view from the top of the surrounding countryside is stupendous. This castle is off the tourist track and there were no buses when we were there. It is up a long winding drive from the main road through beautifully wooded terrain - ideal for hiking

...and I've been to a lot. Aggstein is an amazing castle even today as ruins; it must have been spectacular in its heyday. It is very well preserved, and the amenities for visitors are excellent, from the visitors' center to the audio tour to the wooden walkways that take you to all around the castle to the surprisingly affordable and high-quality restaurant in the courtyard. The only complaint is that the signs are only in German - English would have been nice. One thing I recommend is to climb up the hill behind the castle for amazing views of the castle and the Danube River below it. There are two rock outcrops - one near and one farther away. We climbed up to the higher one and were rewarded with the most spectacular view imaginable (see my pictures). It only took us 10 minutes or so to get there, and the trail is very manageable. Although it isn't marked, you can't get lost if you stay along the ridge.

I visited this attraction with my family in July 2013.It is a beautiful place to visit with a great infrastructure that allows one to explore the ruins, including cafeteria and gift store. The view from the Wachau is amazing.

We really enjoyed this castle ruin. You can climb all over it and really get a feel for how people lived in those days. The one euro English audio guide is really nice. We went backwards to the route others took, but you just push a number by certain spots for great information. We were going to hike to the castle, but the "trail" is basically the road, so driving is much preferred. It is a beautiful drive and the views from the ruin are spectacular. Lots of walking and steps. Don't miss it!

If you can brave the long, steep walk to the top (or have a car) this ruin is a great place to visit. The view over the valley at the top is stunning and well worth the climb in it's self. There is a lovely cafe up there too where you can refuel before heading back down again. Not everything has English translations but you do get a leaflet which explains the ruin's history. It is a great place to explore, not to be missed.

Great castle ruins to explore- especially if it's not crowded like the day we went. Its a very steep drive up to the castle, but don't be alarmed (like we were) the narrow road opens up to a nice large parking area at the top. It's about a kilometer drive up the tiny access road to the parking lot. Great views of the river. The audio guide is great for only a Euro. Has neat sounds in the back ground. We even ate at the restaurant there. Pretty tasty. NIce free clean restrooms. Not good for strollers or wheel chairs. Lots of stairs to climb.
