The kingdom of Agamemnon. This site shows a formidable acropolis that drips in history. From the towering Lion Gate up to the Palace and the acropolis itself, you cannot help but be transported into the past to imagine those who lived, worked, ruled, worshipped and died here. Silmpy amazing.

Took a day trip from Athens to visit this wonder. A must for anyone travelling to Greece to see the Palace and the Lionesses Gate also home to the kingdom of Agamemnon. We visited the tomb of Agamemnon which is absolutely well preserved and beautiful. We were dwarfed by the large stones they used to build it. Please visit this site, you will not be disapointed.

Well, lets focus the truth: there is very few remaining from Mycenae. But to think that this rocky hill dominated the world 3500 years ago, that people who lived there are the protagonists of the most important Mith of our civilization... it is a MUST to go there and be absorbed by that place.

Visiting the birth site of the universally known tale of the Trojan war, really gives you a feeling of stepping back into the past. Following the path that winds through the citadel, main entrance (with its beautifully carved lions) and surrounding areas, gives you the opportunity to see this legendary place with other eyes. If you are interested in history, I would recommend this place along with the Theater of Epidaurus, with the possibility of seeing both in one day. Seeing the citadel in the landscape of rolling hills and breathing the same air as the Mycenaean Kings did once, really is a unique feeling, which many history-interested people often dream about. This was my case, and I can say, I was in no way disappointed by the experience. This having been said, do not plan more than 2-3 hours on the ground, because the citadel is relatively modest in size.

Given that the remains of Mycenae go back to 1300BC, this is an impressive archaeological site. The gateway is particularly magnificent, and the setting of the whole site is stunning. The site is smaller than I imagined, and doesn't match in size and splendour Messene for instance, but is well worth making the effort to visit en route to elsewhere. Like most ancient sites in Greece, this is set on a hill, but not very demanding! Either on the way, or whilst leaving, do stop to visit the ancient tomb a short distance from the main entrance...extremely impressive and well preserved.

Having taught Greek history for two decades and read the classic literature many times, I was thrilled to visit ancient Mycenae for the first time this past May. I booked a day tour from Athens because I wanted to see the countryside and walk in the footsteps of the great heroes and historical figures of ancient Greece. Needless to say, I was not disappointed! The ride from Athens took about two hours. The countryside, which offers stunning views of the mountains and valleys of Greece, stands in stark contrast to Athens, which is rather dirty. Strolling through the ruins of Mycenae was like taking a trip back in time. As I walked through the famous Lion's Gate, I almost had to pinch myself as a reminder that I was actually there. There was also the bee-hive tomb, which is believed to have been the final resting place of Agamemnon's remains. One may work one's way through the ruins to the top of the acropolis, and while it is a bit of a grade, the view at the top is breathtaking. Ancient Mycenae was the highlight of my trip to Greece and should be at the top of one's list when exploring the countryside.

Oh my gosh, there is so much to see at this site and if you know a bit about ancient history, perhaps read the Iliad or the Odyssey, it comes alive. We visited in early September and the weather was perfect. The Treasury of Atreus is very unusual with its beehive shape. The Cyclopean Walls are made of such huge stones and the famous Lion Gate is the entrance through the walls. The view of the surrounding hills is breathtaking--I added a few pictures for you to see.

The archaeological site is much like any other - labeled and identified well. The Mycenae people were warriors and built, as many did, on top of a steep hill. We wondered all through the grounds and then found the cistern (underground cave) they got their water supply from. Loved this because I love exploration! The perfect end to this adventure is going to the National Archaeological Museum in Athens to see all the gold that was found here. It is truly amazing.....gold clothes, gold masks, gold baby gowns, gold darts, gold eating utensils, gold, gold gold! There are also other ancient artifacts found in this settlement on display. There is an entire floor wing dedicated to this one find though.

A must see sight. Ancient ruins with a stunning view. Free on certain Sundays (check online). So cool to see the Lions Gate in person.

We had amazing weather when we visited this site, despite it being winter. Winter is an advantage (if there is no rain) to visit because you don't have to wait for a clear spot to take photos. A bit of a climb and I had to use my walking stick but it was great to be on the top. One of our favourite sites in Greece. Kids loved running around the site and we liked the museum because of the artifacts. Views of the country side were breathtaking, so glad I made the climb to the top. There was a little goat pen at the top and it really made us feel like we'd stepped back in time.

Set in beautiful landscape and nature, this ancient site takes your breath away. It's a large site that needs time to explore thoroughly. Well worth visiting the museum too which includes clear explanation about the history and the various civilisations that have used the site, building on top of previous ones. Don't forget to visit the Treasury of Atreus half a km from the main archaeological site on your way down the hill, the best preserved of the 4-5 such Tholos tombs at the site. For nature lovers, bring your binoculars for a look at the birds around the site or the flower book in spring.

The Trojan war cannot be explained without the greed of Agamemnon, the King of Mycenae at that time. So it was an experience to reach there and see how it actually was. Not much is left of the Kingdom, apart from locations, where the palace stood, the gates, the burial grounds etc. Once on top of the hill and where the palace stood, the scene across the mountains and fields are breathtaking. Close by is also the tomb of Agamemnon which is a must visit.

The ancient Greeks often built their settlements on the top of hills for security and this one must have been almost impregnable as it is built of solid stone at the top of an extremely steep hill. Much of what's still left was discovered by a German, Heinrich Schlieman, in the 19th century, who identified various buildings by reference to Homer. Much of his identification turned out to be wrong unfortunately - what he thought was Agamemnon's tomb has been proved to be 400 years out. The buildings are mostly ruins these days and there's not much left to see of the palace, but the tombs and the Lion's Gate are fascinating. The whole place is very atmospheric though, especially the view of the plain and mountains surrounding it, and it's astonishing that anything survives given that it was built around 1,600 BC. It's worth going on a tour to get the whole story and it is also quite remote. In winter, it can also be extremely cold and there was a strong and biting wind raging the day we went in December. Definitely worth a visit.
