agios andreas acropolis & museum

This site is a little difficult to find. It's at the top of a large hill, but you don't need to hike to get there. There is a paved road that allows you to drive your car most of the way up; then there's just a very short, but steep, walk to the actually site. There's a small museum that's interesting and educational, and the archaeological site itself is wonderful (although I'm a history buff, so I get very excited about these things). However, my husband and I wished there had been more signs detailing what we were looking at. There's also a very quaint church just next to the archaeolgical site that is open to the public, and you get a great view from here over the entire island...makes for some great photos. It can be pretty windy here, so be prepared. There's also a good amount of walking on uneven ground, so wear sturdy footwear. Incredibly, even in the middle of summer, this place wasn't crowded at all. We only saw a couple other people while we were there. I don't know if they exist, but we didn't see anywhere to purchase food, drinks, or souvenirs, and we didn't see any bathroom facilities here.

The ruins are very well preserved and you'll have a wonderfull view from the top of the hill. The climb is an easy one (from the car parking, there is a longer path but we did't used it) thou I would not advise a walk during the hottest hours of the day. The small museum has some interesting pieces and gives you a detailed explanaition of the history of the place and of the island. The small church on the top of the hill is open (you'll just have to open the door).Attention the place closes at 14:00PM.

You can get there on foot by climbing up the hill (an easy 30 min walk from the main road to Vathy) or drive all the way up to the top! I prefer to walk up the hill and enjoy the smell of sage and thyme as I go up! (and the views over the Sifnos, Paros and the other islands...)The visitor passes first from the little museum with all the necessary information that helps to understant the place and its history and then a short walk through the stone paved path to the walled town. There are signs all over the place explaining what is what (you can only see the foundations of the buildings as well as the streets and squares) . The views from the top are breathtaking!!!. Do not forget to visit the little church of Agios Andreas. (if you are around at the end of November do not forget to go to the panigiri (religious festival) with traditional food, local wine and traditional music and dancing!!!)

From Apollonia you take the central pedestrian street and go south to Katavati. You pass the magnificent Angelloktisti church (at your right). On the map the church appears as PANAGHIA Katakopi, but this is a mistake. Fifty meters after you go right, following the direction Profitis Ilias. You cross the asphalt, turn a bit to the right and just before the carpenter you take the hiking path to Pr. Ilias. You go uphill, around the mountain Ghadhinelia (437m) and at the first path you see at your left you follow it up to Aghii Anargiri church. Then you see the Acropolis and its (very nice) museum. The whole complex (the Acropolis, the museum, the church, the view) is stunning. You can return from the western part, just in front of the church and take the asphalt road back to Katavati.The hiking, with a couple of stops, takes between 2 and 3 hours and is not difficult. You can do it all year round but in summer it is better to start before 8.00.

Η Ακρόπολη του Αγίου Ανδρέα είναι χτισμένη επάνω στο δεύτερο ψηλότερο σημείο της Σίφνου. Στο πιο ψηλό σημείο του νησιού είναι χτισμένη η εκκλησία του Προφήτη Ηλεία. Η πρόσβαση στην Ακρόπολη γίνεται με δυο τρόπους. Ο πρώτος είναι με τα πόδια, από το σημείο του δρόμου όπου υπάρχει σχετική πινακίδα, που προϋποθέτει όμως ανηφορική πορεία σε στενό χωμάτινο μονοπάτι με πολλά σκαλοπάτια και διαδρομή τουλάχιστον μισής ώρας που οδηγεί κατευθείαν στην εκκλησία του Αγίου Ανδρέα και από εκεί στον αρχαιολογικό χώρο. Ο δεύτερος και πλέον συνήθης τρόπος είναι, ακολουθώντας τον ασφαλτοστρωμένο δρόμο, να φθάσει ο επισκέπτης με το αυτοκίνητο σχεδόν μέχρι την είσοδο του Μουσείου, όπου υπάρχει χώρος για στάθμευση. Η είσοδος στην Ακρόπολη και στο Μουσείο είναι μόνο 2 ευρώ και αξίζουν τον κόπο. Στην είσοδο υπάρχει ένα μικρό αλλά πολύ ενδιαφέρον Μουσείο από όπου ξεκινάει ένας μικρός πεζόδρομος που φτάνει άνετα μέχρι την κορυφή και την εκκλησία του Αγίου Ανδρέα. Στην Ακρόπολη έχει διαπιστωθεί ανθρώπινη δραστηριότητα τουλάχιστον από τη Νεολιθική εποχή και την εποχή του Χαλκού, δηλαδή γύρω στο 4.000 π.Χ., ενώ η ισχυρή οχύρωση με το διπλό τείχος ανάγεται στη Μυκηναϊκή εποχή. Εντυπωσιάζει το εσωτερικό κυκλώπειο τείχος, οι βάσεις που έχουν απομείνει από τα διάφορα οικοδομήματα και το μεγάλο ναό, που φανερώνουν την πυκνή κατοίκηση της Ακρόπολης, οι στενοί δρόμοι, το αποχετευτικό σύστημα και η μεγάλη κυκλική στέρνα καθώς και το σύστημα για τη συλλογή των υδάτων της βροχής. Στην κορυφή του λόφου υπάρχει και το λευκό μικρό εκκλησάκι του Αγίου Ανδρέα το οποίο είναι συνήθως ανοιχτό. Από το σημείο αυτό έχετε την πιο ωραία θέα, όχι μόνον της Σίφνου, αλλά και άλλων νησιών. Από εκεί φαίνονται η Φολέγανδρος, η Σίκινος, η Ίος, η Αντίπαρος, ενώ με πολύ καθαρό ορίζοντα μπορεί να φανούν η Δήλος και η Μύκονος. Έτσι, ο επισκέπτης μπορεί να σχηματίσει την ιδέα των Κυκλάδων (του κύκλου) δεδομένου ότι τα νησιά αυτά τον περιτριγυρίζουν. Ιδανικό σημείο για φωτογράφηση. Κατεβαίνοντας από την Ακρόπολη πρέπει οπωσδήποτε ο επισκέπτης να σταματήσει στο μικρό αλλά καλαίσθητο Μουσείο και να θαυμάσει το μεγάλο πιθάρι και τα υπόλοιπα εκθέματα που βρέθηκαν στις ανασκαφές, καθώς και μια μεγάλη αεροφωτογραφία της Ακρόπολης. Επίσης μπορεί να δει και ένα μικρό βίντεο που αναφέρεται στον αρχαιολογικό χώρο, στα οχυρωμένα κάστρα του νησιού, στους περίπου εξήντα ερειπωμένους πύργους που έχουν απομείνει, στις ζώνες των μεταλλευμάτων του νησιού, καθώς και σε ένα διάγραμμα με το δίκτυο των στοών εξόρυξης μεταλλευμάτων, πολλές από τις οποίες ανάγονται στην αρχαιότητα. Σημειώνεται ότι κοντά στο Μουσείο υπάρχουν και πεντακάθαρες τουαλέτες. Αξίζει ένα μεγάλο μπράβο στο Γιώργο, το Φύλακα της Ακρόπολης και του Μουσείου, ο οποίος με αγάπη φροντίζει για την ευπρέπεια και την καθαριότητα του χώρου, πρόθυμος να εξηγήσει και να απαντήσει σε κάθε ερώτηση που του κάνουν οι επισκέπτες.

Avevamo solo un'oretta libera prima di tornare sulla nave da crociera ormeggiata a Katakolon e l'agenzia dove avevamo noleggiato l'auto per la visita al sito archeologico di Olimpia ci ha suggerito di spenderla sulla spiaggia di Agios Andreas a pochi chilometri dal porto. Il ristorante gode di una bella terrazza affacciata sul mare, con accesso diretto ad una spiaggia dove possono giocare i bambini e che sicuramente d'estate e' dotata di ogni confort. L'ambiente e' casual ma ricercato: decisamente superiore allo standard greco anche per il servizio. La cucina e' locale poiche' vengono serviti solo piatti greci. il menù quindi non è vario ma gli ingredienti sono freschi. ottima scelta di birre. Molti tavoli erano occupati malgrado la bassa stagione ed il giorno infrasettimanale a dimostrazione della assoluta validità del ristorante che offre momenti di vero relax

Προσοχή στο ωράριο διότι κλείνει στις 2.30 μ.μ. Η θέα είναι καταπληκτική. Υπάρχει ασφαλτοστρωμένος δρόμος που σας ανεβάζει στο parking.

Ce site antique a été très bien restauré et est très bien entretenu. On regrette que les autorités locales n'en fasse pas plus de publicité. De plus, il n'y a pas d'arrêt des transports en commun qui désserve l'endroit, donc pour y aller il faut soit louer un véhicule, soit y aller en taxi. Mais le site vaut bien le détour. En outre une fois au sommet, la vue est très belle.Le prix d'entrée est très démocratique: 2 euros par personne.

Luglio 2012.Siamo stati in questa bellissima spiaggia greca a pochissimi chilometri da Katakolon.Ottimo mare ( sabbia ecpiccola scogliera); spiaggia pulita ed attrezzata con lettini, ombrelloni e sedie o sdraio. Un bel palmeto abbellisce la spiaggia e la rende veramente unica.Bellissimo bar e zona attrezzata per mini club. Valido il ristorante attivo fino a tarda sera.Il prezzo: gratis, ma è obbligatoria la consumazione al bar con prezzi nella media ( caffè 1 euro servito in spiaggia, acqua da mezzo litro 0,50 centesimi).ne vale la pena.Da consigliare e....soprattutto da ritornare

La vista che si gode da Aghios Andreas è fantastica !Vale la pena salire verso il tramonto ed una giornata di cielo limpido : potrete vedere le isole vicine e il sole che ci si tuffa in mezzo !In tutta Sifnos una vista più bella la si ha solo da Aghios Simeon...

Siamo saliti prendendo il sentiero a piedi e dopo 20 minuti siamo arrivati alla sommità di uno dei monti che caratterizzano Sifnos in cima al quale c'è il monastero Agios Andreas. Vale la passeggiata, soprattutto al tramonto
