We went for a guided tour through the town, and learned quite a few things we didn't expect. Very worthwhile! It's a charming old town, with most historic buildings preserved.

Bamberg is an attractive small town and Altstadt is charming, romantic and quiet at night. It is within 15min walk from railway station.Suggest to stay 1 to 2 days at Bamberg to experience its atmosphere.

Took a lovely tour of the town as part of our Christmas River cruise. We arrived early on a crisp Sunday morning which meant very little was open in town. Our guide provided valuable information though our headsets during our walk-about of town and at all attractions we visited. We were trilled to observe a single "whitewater canoeist" practicing his skills in 0 degrees celsius weather on the rapids next to City Hall....that is dedication. Our stroll continued to the Bamberg Historical Museum, the Dom, St. Michaels, and The Rose Garden (nice view of the town but no flowers). Last stop was to the Smoked Beer Brewery to pick up a bottle of "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier" before heading back through the Christmas market to our pick up point. This is a quiant little town that provided a backdrop for a nice day of touring. I just wish some of the shops were open.

Arrived by train and walk to aldstadt seems a while before buildings get interesting ( unlike Nuremberg )area around the water is pretty but expected it to be nicer. Little Venice - a row of houses on the water is pretty but spoilt by parked cruise boats. The nicest area is around the Dom. Quite bust with tourists even on Friday in February

I had some problems while getting here by train form Munchen due to not wonderful german , but when I eventually went out of the railway station, this small and quite town immediately got my attention.I was fascinated by everything I saw there and felt like by help of my perosnal timemachine I appeared in the Miedeval.

You cannot travel through Bavaria without seeing Bamberg. Unfortunately, we were only there for 24 hours but I intend correcting that on our next visit. The waterways throughout the town are so picturesque and the little cobbled streets as they were in the Middle Ages. There are so many little outdoor eateries ( in the summer season) and some wonderful hotels and B & BsThe visitor centre is very helpful and should be your first stop. So much to see - I want to come back in the winter.

Bamberg is a very beautiful, medieval city with many historical buildings and roads, bridges and an ideal setting for romantic people at Christmas, seeking rest for two. Don't miss Hotel Messerschmidt with some nights and dinners; testing the wine in an original wine cellar.

Bamberg's Altstadt was surprisingly untouched by war. Experience many different styles of architecture blended together to create an eclectic mix in Bavaria. There are many photo opportunities everywhere you look. If you are driving, I would suggest you park in the carpark near the visitor center. This is a great starting point. You can get a town map in English and ask questions inside. You can find the center here: http://en.bamberg.info/poi/tourist_information_bamberg-5019/In anticipation of the trip, I purchased an iphone app called Bamberg iGuide. This is an audio walking tour of the old city. It is available in German and English. I highly recommend the app as I learned many things that a simple walking map glosses over. There are some wordy parts of the audio tour, but you can fast forward, rewind, replay as needed. The Cathedral is amazing inside - do not skip taking the time to explore and take photos. There are a lot of lovely shops and cafes along the route. As with everything in Bavaria, the shops are closed on a Sunday, so I would recommend going on any day other day of the week. I spent about 5-1/2 hours there and saw most everything even with a lunch break and afternoon coffee stop. I would like to go visit in the summer to see everything in bloom in the city gardens as well as the surrounding areas. However, it was a wonderful visit even on a very cold and windy winter day.

We've been there early December and enjoyed the great Christmas market. Nice pedestrian roads, some beautiful churches and nice atmosphere.

Bamberg's town centre is a mixture of a small historic centre and surrounding modern shops. It's very pleasant to explore but does lack the atmosphere of more complete medieval towns. The town hall impressively straddles the river atop 2 bridges, and a short walk away are a cathedral and small collection of picturesque riverside houses dubbed "Little Venice", so there is plenty to occupy visitors for a half day.

this was a day trip with leger holidays to the Christmas markets. The old town was lovely little narrow streets and old houses with old fashion shutters Well worth the trip. Christmas market was very nice and large the people friendly

Christmas market large and had good quality stalls. Nativity trail had some excellent cribs, but a few venues did not have the number described in the Tourist Board brochure. Old Town buildings were charming and local people very friendly and helpful
