If you don't want to travel to some southern or eastern Mediterranean destination in order to see a Roman bath complex in great condition you can find in the heart of Europe here a few miles from where Germany, France and Switzerland join there borders. Well presented and the best: The hot springs still operate a few yards away in present-day baths and spa.

I love these ruins... though they are behind glass (or plastic) you can get a good idea of the set up, and picture how the Romans must have used it. I've even seen a wedding held here.

It was very hot under the glass roof in summer. Beautiful location. Descriptions in several languages.

Wondering around Badenweiler one day we saw the sign pointing to the Roman Baths (as translated by my wife who was the only one in our family who could speak and read German), interesting we thought since we were in Germany. Off we went down the path and almost at the bottom of the hill was the archaeological dig in a nice enclosed 'Glass house'. Fee to enter was minimal and it was one of those wonder around at your leisure.Exhibit had raised walkways in and around the dig site which meant you could get right into the site and imagine what it was like to be a roman having a bath thousands of years ago. Amazing after all these years the level of preservation and it also had a nice video that you could kick off (in the language of your choice) which explained the dig, the artefacts and the history of the site.Thoroughly recommend a visit if your in the area and especially if you love history and/or archaeology.

This is an excellent display of the archeological dig and preserved site of the Roman baths in Badenweiler. The completely enclosed site has raised walkways over the baths that allow you to walk over the baths and see what has been excavated and preserved.

The ruins of this roman bath are amazing because of its integrality. You can just imagine what live was once. We had just a 2 days trip in the region, but its worth seeing it.

You can see the ruins from the steaming pools of Caseopia thermal and to think that there have been people bathing here in wonderful warm water for thousands of years is a wonderfully rare experience of historical continuity.

Sometimes 'ruins' are really just what my husband so disdainfully calls them: a pile of rocks. I admit to having dragged him around lots of them since I'm interested in archeology, but the Roman Bath ruins in Badenweiler are anyhting but: no effort has been spared to preserve what's left. The extensive ruins, which still feature sizeable walls that clearly let you see the different rooms and culverts, have been given a glass structure to protect them from the elements. There are many signs explaining how such a bath worked, how the Romans managed to have a 'tepidarium' with, yes, tepid water, the 'calidarium', with hot water, and the 'frigidarium' with the cold water - how they managed to get the water to the desired temperature. In this place, with just a little imagination, history comes alive for you. If you do visit the Roman Bath ruins, take a walk around this beautiful park it sits in. Badenweiler has a very specific, almsot Mediterranean climate, and thus you can find trees there - many of them grown to enormous height and girth, which wuokdnot grow elsewhere in the area, or not very well. There are, for example, a few really stately Redwoods (Sequoias).
