After exploring the hustle and bustle of the Nice, Monaco, Eze, area, a short trip to the hidden gem of Aprilcale and Perinaldo was a wonderful surprise. It's rustic and simple compared to Eze but it's still real!! We hiked from Apricale to Perinaldo which took approx 1 hour one way. A rewarding hike from one perched village to another. Follow the red and white stripe markers and you'll find your way. The trail from Aprilcale starts from just below the restaurant Apricale da Delio. Try the rabbit ravioli before you go, sooo good!! Have fun!!

My family and I were staying 40 min from the Italian border just outside Nice, and in search of some adventure, we decided to go on a day trip to Italy. We visited the Ventimigla market, but I would suggest by-passing that and going straight up to the mountains, which is what we did next.Apricale is an authentic and beautiful perched village. It is a quiet version of Eze, with a lot more charm however very quiet. We wondered through the narrow streets and then had lunch outside at Ristorante Apricale Da Delio. The lunch itself was worth the drive. Following lunch we hiked up to Perinaldo, the hike was beautiful, however the village did not compare to the lovely streets of Apricale.

The approach into town is picturesque. This doesn't over much in touristy shops (good) but offers a feeling of what it was like to live in a remote village. It is worth a half day with a lunch if you are traveling thru. Its about an hour ride off the main highway between Monaco and San Remo.

The square is beautiful with a lovely view over Perinaldo, there are several bars and restaurants to choose from, and in summer they seem to organise lots of events. I love it.

We followed a road up from Apricus Locanda and turned left on a small concrete road leading us around the top and back of the village so we could see Apricale and the surrounding countryside from all around, just strolling in the sunshine and taking photos along the way, listening to the birds and enjoying the perfume from plants and shrubs and especially the olive groves. Just under 3 hours at a leisurely pace and back to the lively village square in time to enjoy a relaxed lunch at one of the restaurants there, before returning to Apricus Locanda for a siesta and sunshine on the balcony. A perfect Sunday!

Most people when you think of Italy would think of City Breaks - Rome, Venice, Milan etc, beach holidays (too numerous to mention) or even the Italian Lakes but this little area (only 40 mins or so from Nice airport) is well worth the visit.Apricale is built upon a hillside just inland from Ventimiglia via Dolceacqua and makes up part of the 5 Valleys (http://www.cinquevalli.it/) - green, lush, local, friendly, fabulous food, mountain rock pools, wildlife.....to be honest it simply has it all.......Go & see another part of Italy different to anything you've probably seen before....one word of warning - Apricale itself is literally built on the top of the hill - so not ideal for the very young or very old....

Just 20 km off the touristy coast of Liguria and half an hour from the border to France is this picturesque hilltop village. Here are few tourists and a very genuine and relaxing atmosphere. The dinner at the nice piazza was a great taste of local cuisine. The Munca E Cara hotel offered unique rooms so different from the regular hotel experience.

The streets up to Apricale are VERY narrow and it is a very busy town in peak season, so be prepared for lots of cars and lots of walking up to the town

After visiting may other towns in Italy, we discovered Apricale as one of the most unique. It is obviously a hill town, but it is surrounded by nearby mountains, and even higher villages like Perinaldo that tower over it. At night, it is very quiet. Silent except for the frogs. It's in a forest. The town is a mixture of very old and some new, with parts of the village that haven't changed in hundreds of years. There is a small grocery, open limited hours, several truly great restaurants, which is amazing for such a small village, and the community piazza. As a base for exploring the area by car (and there is a lot to explore!) it was very convenient. There are a ton of nearby villages that are each unique and worth visiting, Perinaldo, Pigna, Rocetta Nervin a, Isolabona, Dolceacqua, and the big cities of Sanremo & Ventimiglia. There are all kinds of hiking opportunities in the area for all skill levels. To my knowledge there are no hotels in Apricale, but several nice apartments for rent. Prices are good. The alleys in the village are very narrow, and several are like medieval caves. It makes for a fun and spooky walk at night. My one complaint about the village is the abundance of cat and dog feces. You have to really watch your step, and the smell is not pleasant. Besides that we enjoyed a quiet 4 nights in the village. We may have been the only Americans there, since this is way off our tourist radar. The French and the British are familiar with the area, as to the number of tourists. We hope to visit again, since we didn't have enough time to do all the things we wanted. Grazie mille Apricale!

apricale is a small italian village (600+ inhabitants) close to the franch border, 170 km west of genoa. it is a small, clean medeval with stone buildings. in summer it is easy to find nice theatre representations scattered in the streets. I recommend to visit the small torrent just below the street (15 min walks right from the farmacy and the elder hostel where a large padre pio monuments severely warns you). It is not a village for old men (steep walking and street paved with stones)

The main road bypasses the tiny streets and central piazza. So the locals meet and kids play in the village center, only accessible on foot via steep, cobbled street. Very picturesque and off the beaten path. Trails through woods connect to other towns for challenging hikes.

It is said that the Apricale is one of the best village in Imperia but I was not impressed.I would prefer Dolceacqua which is not far from Apricale and much prettier for me.
