There is nothing to dislike about this atmospheric, ancient and beautiful church. It's dark inside but that just makes the place even more special. It gives a window into the early Christian world that was building these soaring churches in the middle of the Dark Ages.

Beautiful church dating back to the early Christian age. Touching in its simplicity, it should be admired in different hours of the day to appreciate the changing of lights. Inspiring atmosphere.

Its a must see place , especially the byzantine floor tiles . five hundred years old and in such good condition makes me want to know what they are stuck down with. Its a simple church , very serene , not much decoration to speak of , but its not needed here .Out the back is the ancient cemetery , also an interesting place to see.

We took a break from Grado and took a boat trip which took in the lagoons, a fish farm and Bascilica di Sant'Eufemia. The afternoon was a lovely relaxing trip taking in the sights and views. The island was very peaceful and picturesque, the mosaics were lovely as were the stained glass windows.

You must see this. It's free entry and is so old and beautiful it is well worth stepping out of the sun for 15 minutes to look round. Very peaceful.

Being in Grado should not only mean sun, clean beach and sea and fish restaurants, but to deal a little with the history of the place-very interesting as you could seeinin wiki:Grado in the past was important (harbour) and a patriarchat."The patriarchate came into being when the schismatic Patriarch of Aquileia, Paulinus (557-569), moved to Grado in the mid 6th century. But in their reunion with Rome in 606, a rival office was set up in Old-Aquileia. Aquileia later entered communion with Rome but was able to keep its independence and title from Grado. In 1451 the see of Grado was merged with Castello to form the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Venice."Of course Sant´Eufemia ism not Sant Oeter in Rome, but because of history and architectureweill worth visiting

On 1 June the Linea Marittima Ferry to the Island of Grado opened for the summer season. It takes an hour from the Audace Mole which is located at the sea ward side of Trieste's grand Piazza Unita d'Italia for a return cost of ten euros. There are good views back to Trieste and the Slovakian coast and a toilet on board. The island itself offers miles of busy sandy beaches and a small local fishing village with an historic (links back to the Empire) church featuring a mosaic floor. The township is now geared for tourism but has retained its unique small village appeal. It was a sunny and although not many were in the water I took the opportunity to swim out to the permanently moored bathing platform. We used the public library to obtain local maps and info. The official tourist info centre was hard to find and quite a walk from the Grado wharf where the Ferry docks. We should have made a plan to locate it on the map before we travelled.

Grado is a beautiful part of northern italy that should not be missed. Great beaches, golf clubs, marina, restaurant and ancient city. Basilica di Sant'Eufemia is a beautiful example of mosaic and art, the Baptistry dates back to late 5th century and the bell tower the 15th century. I really enjoyed the natural beauty of this place and highly recommend a visit.

One of the biggest examples of early mosaics. Quite interesting is the Christ was symbolised by a cook which was fighting with a turtle.

61paolo61
