This was one of the highlights of our trip. The Roman town of Aquileia had been recommended by others so we visited on our way back to Venice airport. Wow! What immense history, what beautiful mosaics, what scale, and what a special atmosphere. There are Roman remains all across the town but if you want to see the best you must see the Basilica and the Campanile. We loved every moment of our visit. It is beautifully preserved and presented so you appreciate everything so much better. Very highly recommended. It must be one of the finest examples of the skill and artistry of the Romans anywhere in Europe.

We climbed this tower in the morning and enjoyed the view. The only drawback was that the bells started to sound while we were in the bell tower without any warning.

The Aquileia Cathedral is a flat-roofed basilica erected by Patriarch Poppo in 1031 on the site of an earlier church, and rebuilt about 1379 in the Gothic style by Patriarch Marquard of Randeck.The façade, in Romanesque-Gothic style, is connected by a portico to the so-called Church of the Pagans, and the remains of the 5th century Baptistry. The interior has a nave and two aisles, with a noteworthy mosaic pavement from the 4th century. The wooden ceiling is from 1526, while the fresco decoration belongs to various ages: from the 4th century in the St. Peter's chapel of the apse area; from the 11th century in the apse itself; from the 12th century in the so-called "Crypt of the Frescoes", under the presbytery, with a cycle depicting the origins of Christianity in Aquileia and the history of St. Hermagoras, first bishop of the city.

Non si può dire cosa sia meglio ...i mosaici sono l'espressione più grande della pazienza e del l'abilità che avevano a quei tempi....Se avete tempo fate un salto a vedere il tempietto longobardo, un ricamo scultoreo a dir poco emozionante!

Bellissimo panorama, bellissima la base nascosta sottoterra ed appoggiata su un un pavimento di mosaico romano (sigh), ma la scala a chiocciola è impegnativa, soprattutto se il tuo pargolo di 7 anni ti corre davanti come uno stambecco e tu porti uno zaino da 20 kili, i gradini hanno un'alzata molto alta e fuori standard, quindi occhio, io ci ho guadagnato una sciatica :D :D

Simbolo della potenza romana del passato, lungo la salita troviamo un tripudio di opere; non si può dire che non sia faticosa, o che il panorama sia strepitoso, ma la sensazione che regala dall'alto è veramentepiacevole

Dichiarata dall'Unesco Patrimonio dell'Umanità, conserva un'area archeologica di straordinaria importanza. E nella basilica patriarcale riposa uno dei più straordinari complessi a mosaico esistenti al mondo.Aquileia, sontuosità romana.

Ci sono tanti gradini e fatica per salire sul campanile, ripagati pero dalla vista e dalla gentilezza e preparazione della custode che ci ha accolti.

Aquileia vale sicuramente la visita.. inoltre con un biglietto cumulativo puoi vedere tutte le bellezze del paese a un costo contenuto.. Il campanile ha un certo numero di scalini da percorrere per raggiungere la cima (munirsi di scarpe comode..) , ma la vista è impagabile. Bella vista del luogo e tra l'altro , della pista ciclabile che percorre dietro alle rovine.

..salire un bel pò di gradini "a chiocciola" per poi trovarsi con uno splendido panorama sulle campagne circostanti

Aquileia ist uns letztlich allen aus der Schule bekannt. Einen nahen Eindruck über Leben, Leiden und Sterben in der damaligen Zeit bekommt man erst, wenn man die Anlage gesehen hat, die sowohl militärische Aspekte als auch Frühchristliches reichhaltig zu bieten hat.
