Take the number 2 bus from anywhere in Livorno to Mantenaro - it is the last stop on the line. You can then use your bus ticket to get onto the funicular railway which takes you up to the top of a hill. From here you can see out over the whole of Livorno - a spectacular sight. Also at the top of the hill is the most beautiful Sanctuary dedicated to Our Lady of Montenaro. There is a church, memorial room, candle room and visitors facilities. There is a lovely square which has nice cafe's and souvenir stalls. Santuario di Montenero is well worth a visit.

Got here via the city tour bus that dropped us off with free tickets to use the funicular railway to reach the church. Amazing views and a little cooler up there as well. The church looks nothing special from outside but is stunning within . Take a walk around to inside of the building , there is a passage that circumvents the church and stop to take in the pictures. All of them depict the death of someone in a simplistic drawing or painting with the image of Mary in the corner. There is another room that shows more modern photos and pictures with equally morbid stories to tell . Fascinating but also a little saddening. But don't let me put you off , you can bypass all of these pictures and just take in the beauty of the church and enjoy the peace and tranquillity within.

It was nice hill side view over Livorno. Do take a trip and see very beautiful church. Outside it doesnt look any special, but altar place is wonderful. It was siesta time, so couldnt stay there too long.

and quiet mid-week. Apparently it gets very crowded at weekends. We took the bus and the cable car and it's a fairly short trip from the city centre. The buses appeared to be co-ordinated with the cable car timings so the journey was simple. The Sanctuary and dedications are interesting but it is worth a visit even for the views alone.

Visited the hilltop location having caught the service bus number 2 from Livorno which terminates at the funicular railway. Catch the railway to reach the mountain top visit and spend some time wondering around the Church and look at the stunning views of the bay of Livorno from the terrace.

Wonderful view, better air, nice spots and restaurants. The monastery is also very good and deserves a visit.

We didn't know what we were going to see and went by the funicular railway and expected only to get a magnificent view... but we found peace and tranquility as we walked the grounds. We didn't eat up there but there were plenty of options. The railway cost E1.40 but you only have 75 minutes to go up and back.

Stopped here before getting the car train Livorno. It's a great little place with amazing views over Livorno, the sea & mountains. Choices of a couple of local Italian restaurants. The one we tried, Il Contino was fantastic. Great food and very good value for money. We sat on the sun terrace looking out over the view. A wonderful respite before the chaos of boarding the train.

i think this is one of the most beautiful and suggestive sanctuary in Italy, but i am sure it is the best in Tuscany. it is located on a hill situated about six kilometers from Leghorn and the wiew is spectacular.you ca get there or by car or by the small and very carateristic funicular that i recommend you. the church is dated from the eigteenth century and the legend said that the Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherd and told him ton build the churh. there is a rich collection of " ex votos " housed around the chrurch, because the Madonna of Montenero miratulated so many people!!!

The sanctuary is located on a hill behind the town, from where you can enjoy a wide panorama. Although its foundation is previous, its current appearance dates from the eighteenth century or later. The feature that most impresses the visitor is the rich collection of "ex votos" housed in an annex on the right of the church, an interesting document of popular religiosity. Two weaknesses (but not directly related to the sanctuary): the kitsch of the goods sold by surrounding shops or stalls; and the fact that on Sunday, just as there is plenty of visitors, the nostalgic funicular leading to the sanctuary is stopped, due to financial problems of Livorno municipality (at least this was the situation in December 2012).

This is a mountaintop shrine to a Virgin Mary of miraculous recoveries. You'll need to take the small funicular (1.20 euro each way) to get there. The church sector is your run-of-the-mill small Catholic church, but the wings are amazing. There are hundreds of dedications - small paintings and medals that have been dedicated after traumatic events - falling out of buildings, getting run over, being gored by a bull, and kidnapped into harem slavery (complete with clothing) - dating to the 19th century. You could spend hours looking at all of them. Outside are memorials to Livorno's famous citizens, including Modigliani. Don't miss the lookout spot to the west of the funicular. It closes for siesta, so avoid going around lunchtime.

On top of a hill with spectacular views of Livorno and the sea. Very spiritual place, for prayers and giving thanks to the Madonna. Place full of objects, photos etc left by families of those "saved"- a bit eerie. Beautiful church, Don't like stalls selling kitch tourist objects at entrance to monastery

I'm Italian, that is the city where I belong. The place is beautiful, over Livorno, with a nice city view. The building is nice, with plenty of religious stories about miracles. If you are in Livorno, you can't miss it.

This was about 5 minutes from where we were staying and is a beautiful church, sanctuary, I would highly recommend it.
