A very pictoresque and old place, the mediaeval city of Otranto is a jewel overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Take your time to wander among its stone-paved narrow streets, old churches, typical houses and tavernas. Don't miss the fantastic Cathedral (11th century) with its amazing Byzantine and Romanic columns, a huge floor mosaic of the "Tree of life" and the "Martyrs' Chapel" (with hundreds of skulls and bones behind glass windows) inside. Further on, the impressive "Castle of Otranto" (the very setting of Horace Walpole's gothic noivel) is dated 15th century. A final suggestion: try to visit the old city at night. It's more suggestive

Lovely town! Exquisite beach! Mosaic floor in the church that is unique and beautiful!A trifecta of sights in a lovely village by the sea. We were lucky to be there on a gorgeous October day when we able to move about freely while pleasant breezes cooled us in the sun.

As Canadians, we have an extra appreciation for infrastructure that is as old as the remnants of this castle structure. Amazing experience, entering at the one end of the ruins and exploring the many streets and corners that have been kept alive through the efforts and enthusiasm that has resulted in this area being an example of old world in modern times.

The old town is really lovely but super touristy, high season can leave you deadlocked in the streets at night! The sea is beautiful and if you scuba or do boats you'll love it. Pay more and stay in the old town. Do not miss the Castle especially if there is a good exhibition on!

It was a very nice experience and my wife enjoyed the locally made biscuits. The shops selling locally made crafts, leather bags and sandals, scarfs and many more.Looking towards the sea gives a strange feeling of the past history of this castle. It is definitely worth visiting.

It is, of course, the reason for which everyone goes to Otranto - besides the sea. And it lives up to its expectations: wonderful both in the morning (although it can get terribly hot) and at night, when is characterized by a nice traffic of locals and tourists.

It is small but charming ! The fortress is usually used for exhibitions (2 years ago I saw a very good one on Picasso drawings, Tauomachia) but it is closed off-season. The mosaic pavement of the basilica it-s a must - everyone should see it cause it-s unique and extremely beautiful. Otranto is one of the small towns along Adriatic Italian coast that should not be overlooked when travelling there.

Fortress is very monumental, you can see there was some importance of this city and it´s harbor in the past, there were battles close to the City as well as in the City itself. It was founded by Greek settlers (its original name was Hydrus), twice was captured by Ottomans (1480 and 1537), later also by French garrison to watch English fleet...rich history could be seen on quality of walls and fortress itself. As everything in Otranto is small, you can easily walk from harbour to the fortress, around through narrow streets, without being tired...do not go there during national holidays (end of July/beg. of August), as the City is completely crowded by Italians.

We kept seeing tourists we had seen earlier in the day in Lecce - not many of them British, mind. Otranto is a great sightseeing visit, with lots of variety, including a beach. The old town is a delight with lovely surprises at every corner, although a little heavy on the shopping opportunities (every one the same) in some places

the place is wonderful despite it is always crowded. You can walk through the little streets up to the castle and then down to the port and you won't feel tired. A great place to visit!

. Di notte poi tutto diventa magico
