Varallo is a stunning Christian pilgrimage site built in the 1500s. But way beyond its value as a religious destination it is a fabulous view into life in the 1500s. There are 45 chapels filled with colorful, life-size terra cotta figures depicting the life of Jesus, as only artists living in the 1500s would depict them. There are literally hundreds of statues in beautiful clothing of the day, horses, children, elegant women, beggars, people with diseases, so much more. It was as if we were standing in the midst of the 1500s. I urge everyone, whether they are religious or not, to see this glimpse into the past. It's very large, and yet we were almost alone.

First time I saw a place like this. The walk along the amazing chapels, the courtyard, the view on the town below, the quietness, lush nature ... All very worth the visit and interesting if you are with friends/ kids who have all different interests. Parking is easy and the place is accessible to elderly, children, handicapped. We had a nice lunch in the main restaurant (if interested, book a table). There is also a picnic facility. I am glad I discovered the place and would certainly recommend it. You can easily spend an hour or two there.

This time I am drawing the report in English. Sinply because this place is Worth a trip from Ok it is UNESCO Heritage but too few people know it.Almost mowhere in the world you can find 45 chapels, each one literally filled with Amazing statues describing the life of Jesus from the announcement Gabriel made to the Visrgin Mary to Jesus's Death in cross.The statues are polychrome, their making is unbelievable, so real they seems.Fresco in each chapel walls perfectly complete this real masterpiece.In a few words, this is a MUST TO SEE place, no matter where you are from.Last but not least, the view from the site is Amazing, stretching from the valley to Monte Rosa mountain tops, over than 4,500 meters.

A marvellous UNESCO world heritage site also known as the New Jerusalem as it is designed to the plan of that town and conceived as a close to home reproduction for pilgrims not wishing to facethe dangers of long distance travel in the 1500's. It has so much to recommend it. Art, history architecture and a beautiful park to chill out in. The first time life-size scultures were placed within frescoed scenes to portray the life of Jesus in Jerusalem, from his birth to his Crucifixion (the chapel which has been exquisitely restored is a must). Hence the birth of the Great Mountain Theatre. Check out the marvellous Tanzio di Varallo paintings that are now in the Pinacoteca in the town of Varallo - he is also known as the Caravaggio of the Alps as he studied under Caravaggio in Rome.

If you are in Valsesia you need to visit this place, the position is great and the walk from Varallo is very nice, It's an historical place,

a very nice hiking in the forest. we went in the rain and saw a waterfall in the trees. it was very beautiful and special.

Da scoprire passeggiando nel parco: ci sono 45 cappelle con i principali aneddoti della Bibbia e la vita di Gesù. Ogniuna è un capolavoro di arte e cristianità.

Il Sacro Monte di Varallo è un posto incantato dove l'arte ti commuove, talvolta quasi primitiva, altre così ricca da lasciarti a bocca aperta. Il percorso. tutto un susseguirsi di sentieri con indicazione della cronologia delle diverse cappelle è ombreggiato, in mezzo a una vegetazione spesso lussureggiante. Il posto di ristoro è gradevole e a prezzi modici. Una bella gita, per il corpo e per la mente, anche per chi non è credente.

Il Sacro Monte è una Riserva Naturale costruita nel XV sec., in poche parole è costituito da una Basilica e una cinquantina di Cappelle affrescate e ornate con centinaia di statue policrome che hanno meritato la segnalazione di Patrimonio mondiale dell' Umanità.Una monumentale porta di ingresso è inserita nelle mura che delimitano il recinto antico della spazio sacro, le varie Cappelle sono collegate tra loro da un percorso in mezzo al verde naturale e le pendici montane dove le Cappelle raccontano e illustrano la Vita, la Passione, e la Morte di Cristo.In questa visita e passeggio ombrato nasce una profonda intimità tra se stessi e le vicende raccontate e diffuse dalla religione cattolica.Momenti di raccoglimento che generano serenità con se stessi e ti confortano per continuare a sopravvivere nel caos o confusione generale di questo mondo in cui viviamo.

Certamente da visitare, il Sacro Monte è davvero un luogo inusuale, con le sue statue che si staccano dagli affreschi, gli stucchi. Ideale per una passeggiata domenicale fuori porta, soprattutto se si vuole mettere insieme natura e arte.

Uno stupendo pezzo di storia, ben tenuto e curato. E' uno dei siti più suggestivi del Piemonte, poco conosciuto e che meriterebbe uno sforzo maggiore di pubblicità. Merita la visita.

E' un luogo sicuramente d'impatto e carico di significati ma è lasciato un po' andare, soprattutto dopo che l'annesso albergo ha chiuso. Peccato perché la natura attorno è molto bella ed invoglia a fare lunghe passeggiate immersi nella sacralità del luogo. Comunque vale una visita.
