We had initially intended to hire bikes and cycle this col, but we ran out of time, so we drove it instead, but we'd love to cycle it in future. The scenery changes as you climb up through the river valley, passing many cyclists on the way! We stopped to take photos on some of the bridges over the river. Amazing geology too, with folded layers of rocks on the steep valley sides. We headed down the other side and stopped at Guillaume, a lovely medieval village, then drove on down the gorges de Daluis, which was stunning - amazing red rocks, like the grand canyon! There were warnings about 17 tunnels, although we lost count! Then arrived at Entrevaux, another lovely fairytale walled town, and well worth a visit.

We drove from Barcelonnette to Nice on the road that crosses the Col de la Cayolle - a high mountain pass located in the French Alps (7,631 ft elevation). The road follows along a rugged and beautiful valley, then gains elevation with multiple switchbacks and snow along the road in early May. We got to the summit and started down the other side - we were glad to get out of the snow fields. There were many waterfalls coming off the mountains (spring runoff) that would not exist in a month or so. We also saw marmots along this road. The French Alps are very rugged with interesting rock layers- the vistas were fantastic!! We thought we had had enough excitement on this drive when we came around a corner and the road went through a large, barren, almost black lava field. This was followed by more lava fields strewn with lush green spring growth and wild flowers. Further down the road there was a sign that there were 17 tunnels and we noticed the soil had turned to a dark red. The red-rock Gorges de Daluis is a 6-kilometer-long gorge cut in the red rock by the Var river (sandstone colored by iron oxide, 260 million years old). There were 17 tunnels alright - almost all just cut out of the rock with no concrete or other coating - just jagged rock, see - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5Vf4iP7S6Q. Most were one way, only one lane, and very narrow. We passed the beginning of the Var River and basically followed it to Nice - passing by little villages in narrow valleys and Medieval castles higher on the hill above them. It was this way until we were only about 15 miles outside of Nice. This was a drive I will never forget!!

Wonderful views climbing up into the snow line, watching all the unusual wildlife. Not so good when some of the passes are closed and that is the way back to base! But that's the Alps!

Really enjoyable ride from Barcelonnette. Steady gradient and a superb evolution of the landscape from a narrow rocky gorge to wider alpine pastures. Not too much traffic, even in August. Great as a 'day out' from Barcelonnette or as part of a 1-day cicuit or as a segment of the Route des Grandes Alpes. Loved it.
