The main building of the museum is a school house built in the Swedish mansion style from 1916. The building contains the Skelleftea museum, Skelleftea Art gallery, museum Anna Nordlander Art Gallery plus the Meijer collection. Inside there is also a really nice coffee shop. The museum is free but I do suggest if you do not read Swedish hire the audio guide as there is very little written in anything other than Swedish. Well worth the visit.

The museum is a bit off the city center but should in any cases be visited. The museum, hosted in the XIXth century Nordanaa center presents the city history thoroughly and offers plenty of nice artifacts as well as reconstructions of various buildings. The archaeological exhibition is quite dates (just by looking at the 25 years old computers they have there) but it is otherwise very well done, from the Stone Age to the present day. Around the center are also a modern art gallery where some Saami art was exposed when I visited,a cafe/souvenir shop and a beautiful garden with many old buildings left intact. I would say that visiting the museum is an absolute must do if you ever come by Skellefteaa!

Have been to the museum many times and always enjoy it. Some wonderful exhibitions that change, and a fantastic range of fixed exhibits that show aspects of life in northern Sweden. A delightful cafe to relax in and fantastic toilets! Always a joy. Thank you Neil and Julia Crighton
