Voted most beautiful town hall of Sweden, this magnificent building with great inner courtyard held an art exhibition of the county collection when we visited. The collection must be worth millions containing Swedish masterpieces from the 20th century. I understand this town hall us used for all kinds of community events. It is a pity it will be torn down when the city moves.

Kiruna town hall is quite beautiful with a rich history. It is located in central Kiruna, close to the central business district and the church of Kiruna. A great scenery towards the mine and the mountains can be seen from the town hall as well.

Very few people in the world really care about art. The town hall in Kiruna is no exception. They hung paintings right at the back of benches for people to sit. And here it was. An African mother with her child, sitting with her head on the painting. I asked one employee at the town hall. She agreed that it hurts to see that paintings are at the verge of being destroyed but she said, " We do not have enough room". Art works are nothing to write home about but the setting is nice and it is free. The building is a significant architectural piece on Sweden.

We came to this place during a stay in Kiruna and enjoyed the place and the exibition that was in the hall. There was an interesting story about Kiruna in the past and the future plus an exhibition about the Sami. Great experience.

We drove passing by this building several times without stopping. In the last day of our 4-days trip here, before we went to the airport, we had 2 hours free time, we decided to go inside to take a look. We were attracted by the tourist pamphlet saying that it is "the most beautiful public building in Sweden in 1964", and we were not disappointed. It is indeed pretty beautiful as a city hall. The building houses an art collection too. If you did not see those office rooms, you would think it is an art museum. In the hall downstairs, there were several hands-on scientific models for school students to play. During our 45-minute visiting there, we saw two groups of very young children with their care-takers there. Besides the informative explanation about how they are going to move the old town to the new location, we appreciated most is the structure of the building and the art exhibition. Even the lights in the city hall are artistic. I enclosed several photos to illustrate what I wrote. If you have 30-45 minutes, it is worthwhile paying a visit.

Typically, tourist guides describe the city hall as an important piece of Swedish architecture. At a glance, it is just a functional building and without seeing some photographs (by chance at another place) showing the inner hall of that building, we probably would not have visited it at all. When you step into that building, you find yourself in a hall (used for speeches) with circumferential corridors on three levels nicely combining wooden balcony fences with concrete pillars and ceilings. Currently, they show there how Kiruna will "evolve", i.e., a model of the city illustrates the phases in which the mine will be expanded and the city will be moved (you may also say destroyed and rebuild at the new location). Further, you will see the planning on the new city hall, a new futuristic building just keeping the clock tower, which is now located on the top of the city hall, as a standalone tower. Visiting the city hall gives a good impression about the future development of the city. Initially, we intended to skip it was worth visiting it.

Tack o lov sparar man alla fall klocktornet.
