The statue is impressive, unfortunately is not finished 100% due to lack of founds. I think that this sculpture has a symbolic value taking in to account the Dacian - Roman wars and that Decebal is looking to a Roman memorial plaque ("Tabula Traiana") which commemorating the completion of Trajan's military road.

We visited the statue by boat, although you could visit by car as well. It's impressive in person, pictures don't do it justice. Enjoyed our trip to Orsova.

If you reach by car this place (18 Km from Orsova), don't miss the chance for a Boat-Ride (25 RON) with this nice guy (Flavian) born here. You will not be disappointed.

It's a nice pit stop on the cruise along Cazanele Mari. Also a cool place to take photos. The interesting thing is that the sculpture is surrounded by nature. So the nature is in the spotlight for now.

For a sculpture that took ten years to complete and cost a lot of money the end result is not even a similarity of King Decebalus. While Dragon, who commissioned and paid for the work and obviously very well off did not have the sculpture made in his image there are a lot who make this claim. The other scenery along the Danube is much more interesting but if you are there you will want to still view this ugly sculpture to have the full package.

We travelled through the Serbian side of the Danube, only to pull the car over and look down on the marvellous sculpture that is now known to us as 'King Decebalus'. We are honest people, so we can safely admit we didn't know about this piece of history before this journey. So you can imagine our delight when stumbling upon this art, surrounded by natural road, water and landscape. So now we travel across the border to view from Rom, but the statue is about 17km past Orșova, so not sure if it's a valid address. But still not gonna try and steal its thunder even though it was raining lightly! Also just as great view being only a few metres away, lovely added bonus of seeing the Mraconia Monastery, even though we couldn't go inside as we were too late.Fully agreed with a previous comment, in saying the statue must be viewed from both countries so that you can realise what geography and history is all about..

A huge "in situ" statue of Decebalus, king of Dacia, facing Tabula Traiana on the serbian shore. The statue is impressive, but, in my oppinion, the Danube Valley in the gorges is more spectacular than this statue. It's a must see attraction because of it's uniqueness, but one must continue the journey through this splendid region in order to get the full package of the attraction.

The most horrible kitsch you can ever see.Under the face of Decebalus there is a Latin inscription which reads "DECEBALUS REX—DRAGAN FECIT" ("King Decebal—Made by Drăgan"). Oh, the irony...

we got there via a 3 hour Danube cruise from Orsova, which I would recommend - you see many other things than just this carving. the carving/statue is like Mt. Rushmore, but not so grand. it is a good likeness of the leader of the Dacia people in the early 100s AD. He is a true Romanian hero and worth seeing if you are in the area. you can also get by car as well, and there is a bridge and pull-outs so you can stop and see it. but the boat is a better view, not being so close. it would help to look up the history and see why he is so revered in Romania before seeing it. The Romans crossed the Danube (a smaller river then because of the dam downstream) just a short ways downstream and there is a carving for that as well. It is history for those interested.

The view on the huge rock statue is brilliant.A trip on the Danube river is a must as well if you get there.

It is not the kind of attraction that you specifically want to see, but if you happen to be in the area it wolud be a shame to miss it. The sculpture itself is not very entertaining, but combined with the lovely view and a trip with the boats along the Danube makes up a very exciting trip.

It's free of charge and you feel good to thing that that is your anchestor. I have seen it from the Danube and near it, on the highway. You have a big parcking space for your car, and then you can stay and admire the view, take pictrures and buy a fridge magnet or a souvenir.

there is nothing to see. a rich man decided to remind about dacs roots but the result is a kitch.you can only see it from the danube, from a boat althought there are some cars stopping there but the perspective is not great.you can see the falling nose.

A wonderful sculpture of dacian king Decebal. Easy to reach by car, not far from Orsova city. Very beautiful view all-around. Worth to see!

It can be visited by car, less than 20 kilometers from Orsova or by boat. It is the biggest rock sculpture in Europe and it represents the most famous Dacian king that fought the Roman wars. It took over seven years to finish (1995-2001) and over one million dollars, financed by the billionaire Iosif Constantin Dragan. Notice that the nose and mustache are enforced with concrete and the hat is not finished completely.
