The place is very nice, clean and quite new. I personally don't consider this as a main attraction in Maramures. I know well enough the area to say that there are many other spectacular places worth visiting. This monastery is a nice example of architecture ans is worth visiting during Easter, when thousands of people come here to celebrate. Looking at all the money spent there in the last years I consider that it was much better to use it for the ancient wooden churches, which often are not in a very good shape and need to be repaired, after more than 300 years....

Take a stop here to clear your mind, to feed your soul, and get some peace.A peace of Heaven fallen on Earth.

Barsana monastery consists of the church, the cloisters, and an ethnological museum, all wood structures. I visited it during Christmas 2014, when the entire Maramures was filled with the joy of Christmas. Everything was magic!

I come here every summer and every time this place exceeds my expectations. Very good to know is that you have a museum (with traditional Romanian clothes and icons) that you can visit and buy souvenirs. And a small tip, the nuns there have a few peacocks (behind one of the buildings) that are very beautiful. Also inside the ”garden” there is a small pound for wishes and great pictures. ;)

I think this is the most beautiful monastery in Romania. In front of the monastery is a restaurant with good authentic food and the prices are very low.

Our guide took us to this Barsana Nunnery. It is a superb example of Maramures wooden church archectitecture. There is also a completely separate museum building of rural life in this area. The rugs, embroideries and household objects are in excellent condition. Well worth the visit. Nuns were working outside in the flower gardens planting bulbs.

I must admit from the very start I didn't go there for the religious aspect of the monastery. I got there in the evening, during the "Vecernie" (the evening service), and there were loudspeakers throughout the premises broadcasting the service. Which was oddly soothing. The scenery is breathtaking, and the nuns are ever-smiling and gentle.

It's located in such beautiful surroundings. You can spend some time there wondering around and admire the unique architecture of the buildings. You can find so much peace there as everyone who visits can tell you. There is also a small museum there where you can buy nice souvenirs. A must see in Maramures.

Barsana Monestery is not easy to reach. You must travel on a lot of winding country roads. But the site itself is beautiful. It is tourist minded with WC and kiosk for a cold drink. Wander around the well kept grounds and enjoy the amazing architecture using the wood products of the neighboring forests.

The place is full of peace and quiet. We enjoyed the wooden sculptures of the monastery and we visited the church.I recommend it.

"Pass through the wooden gate and you'll step into the heaven" told us the old men who traveled with us. And he was right. The place it's spiritual and calm, intelligent designed, nice made, well maintained. I left the place with the feeling that I'm more calm and good, and with the promise that I'll come back there, sometime.

Barsana Monastery is the place where human inspiration meets the divine touch. It is a new monastic complex, but the holiness starts to land over the place.

The first church from Bîrsana was erected probable in the 14-th century but there was no traces. The second wood church (probable from the 17-th century) is now in the village Bîrsana.Today we can visit here the new monastic place built after 1990, one of the largest in Romania. It is a two-story wooden church, an altar of summer, the administration, a beautiful museum, glass painting and textile workshops, accommodation for nuns and tourists etc. In the small cemetery is also the tomb of Yvette Cauchois, a French X-ray spectrometry specialist. Hilly landscape is splendid, the impression is of a paradise - beautiful, bloom, quiet. It is interesting to participate in an orthodox service outdoors. Outside the monastery is a large car parking and a restaurant, small shops. I can only highly recommend visiting the monastery and its annexes.
