There are Northerners who remember Seaham in its coal mining days who have never visited for years and who perpetuate the myth that the town is not worth visiting. Well it certainly is! Whatever the weather the beach is stunning. I love to see the waves lashing over the pier or on a calm day wander on the pebbled beach looking for sea glass. Seaham now seems to embody cafe culture as there are so many good quality eating places from Lickety Split for your ice cream fix, the Lookout on the harbour for divine scones and other snacks and many others.Hoards of visitors now come to see Ray Lonsdale's cliff top statue of a British Tommy the minute after WW1 ended. The main street is tired and not yet up to the standard of the sea front but given time and effort it could be another attraction because the people of Seaham have vision.

Waves pounding up the beach, dogs running along the water's edge, couples arm in arm, children playing, the sun just waffling, the wind biting cold. We had hot chocolate and then fish and chips. Heaven.

We called in at Seaham on the off chance as it was part of the coastline we hadn't visited before. What a lovely place - the sea was blue and the coastline bathed in winter sunshine. We talked to a local man who was very friendly and gave us a lot of information about the coastal walk. We intend to come back and take the coastal path to Hartlepool - perhaps later this year but definitely when the weather improves. Lovely place - nice people.

We live close to Hartlepool and whenever possible we try to visit the coastal area. There are some stunning walks, deserted beaches and lots of fresh air. This area is definitely worth a visit on a weekly basis where you can take in the scenery, breath in the clean air and get away from it all.Miles of walks where there are no ice cream shops, Fish and Chip smells and no amusement arcades, perfect!

Drove through here after meaning to for years of passing on train to Edinburgh. Absolutely stunning coast, fantastic drive. Great places to stop and eat and just walk for miles with stunning views.

I used to live a few miles from here but had to move inland due to new job. This is one are of the North east I really miss the most. Although not quite as rugged as Northumberland, it has its own charm and character to appreciate. During the summer months, put on your walking shoes and enjoy what it has to offer, The are offers plenty of opportunity to cyclists and mountain bikers too. During the late autumn and winter months it is bracing and well worth the visit to watch what the sea does to the local lighthouse - go on, take a look!

The Durham Coastal Footpath is a superb 11 mile walking route from Seaham in the north to Crimdon in the south, leading through stunning clifftop scenery with links into coastal villages each with their own special stories to tell. This coast is one that has been affected by constant change, both natural and manmade, but it has always been a special place for nature lovers. The underlying geology is Magnesian Limestone with boulder clay above it which supports fantastic grassland with wonderful plants and other wildlife, including the very special Durham Argus butterfly that feeds on the rockrose and can be seen during the summer months.Coal mining was the dominant industry in the area throughout the 20thC but following the closure of the pits in the early 1990s considerable effort has been put into restoring the coastal grasslands leading to a recreated coastal landscape. Along the route you will still see remnants of the colliery spoil that despoiled the beaches for over 100 years. The walk starts in Seaham where the North Dock, created for the export of coal, is now a smart new marina next to the vibrant working port in South Dock. The path follows the cliffs to Nose’s Point where there are superb views down to Whitby on a clear day. This was the site of the former Dawdon colliery but now a gateway to the most tranquil section of the Heritage Coast. The airy route continues south taking in Hawthorn Dene, passing Beacon Hill and Easington Colliery down into Castle Eden Dene and on to Blackhall, where the final dramatic scenes of Get Carter were played out. Then on past the smugglers caves of Blackhall Rocks, the path runs on through a chicane of small gills to finish at Crimdon and its dunes, where little terns return from Africa every year to breed on the open beach.Along the way you can detour into the villages and onto the fascinating beaches, with some routes more challenging than others.

The best place to start a walk on this coast is at noses point in Seaham, there is ample parking and a few interpretive boards, there is a steep (after you step over a low fence) path down to an industrial beach area which is often completely deserted, and about half a mile further on a set of well maintained steps back near the limestone stack leading up to make a circular route of about an hour. Our dog loves it.If you wish to go further hawthorn dene is about 2 miles and offers bluebell woods in the spring. Keep going and you can do 10 miles or more there are several sets of steps down to beaches of variable quality, but mainly industrial, until you are south of Castle Eden dene when the beach rather than the cliffs dominate and the sand improves dramatically. My favourite spot is heading South from Noses point just before Hawthorn dene, a view down onto the bay at Hawthorn from the cliff top, catch it in the sunlight and you would be hard pressed to believe it wasn't in the Mediterranean.

Enjoyed the variety of this coast line from cliff to beaches which the mines had previously used for dumping. Some wonderful but hidden sandy beaches. Nice promenades to walk along.
