St Albans South Signal Box is a fabulous attraction. It is obvious that the people who restored it and now look after it have put their heart and soul into the project. I never would have expected that a signal box could be so interesting. Not only have they restored it faithfully, they also converted it into a great museum that includes interactive elements. It was great fun and really interesting. Thoroughly recommended!

We visited with our grandson on the St. Albans free weekend. We all thought it was interesting and would recommend for all ages.

You do not have to be a history buff or train spotter to enjoy this wonderful small museum and preserved signal box in St Albans. The museum is kept in immaculate condition with very enthusiastic staff who will give a tour of the museum and allow you to pull various leavers and ring the station bell.Open from 2pm to 5pm on 2nd and 4th Sunday’s of each Month (Nov to Mar 2nd Sunday only) and on other special days.Parking immediately outside will cost £2.50, but the museum is free.

We decided to pop in while on a trip to the local model railway show, and really enjoyed it. We ended up spending more time here than at the show. Staffed by very friendly and knowledgeable people it is well worth a visit.

Thoroughly worth the small walk out of the centre of the town. It was staffed with extremely knowledgeable and very welcoming people. And despite not being a huge train enthusiast myself it was very interesting. One of the volunteers showed us around the site and all the rail paraphernalia, and then inside the box itself there was a demonstration on how all the signals and their levers were used, with the opportunity to pull some of them yourself!Definitely worth a trip!!!

Now that summer is here, this 'Railway Embankment' feature is in it's glory. Mother Nature is determined to display her visual arts as a wonderful background to the Signal Box, resplendent after a new coat of paint. The scenery changes daily. There is also a continuing change to the items being displayed with new items being added. Not only is the Box open on the 2nd and 4th Sunday afternoons between 14:00 & 17:00 each month (April - October), but groups are welcome by arrangement evenings and weekends for the full tour.For the specialist, a Tyers no.6 system is now working, and listen for the platform bell !

Staffed by friendly and committed volunteers, this Heritage Listed Railway Signal Box, a rare survivor of hundreds, is well worth makeing a short visit to. The demonstrations of how the the trains were controled in a safe and efficient manner, explain a lot about how it was done, and how it happens now.

You need to be interested in trains or engineering to fully appreciate your visit here. There must have been an incredible amount of work to restore this signal box (and it's not finished yet, will restoration ever finish?). The volunteers are so knowledgeable and enthusiastic, that they make the place come alive with their stories and explanations. Also if you are a regular commuter to London it gives a unique perspective of the train line and station. You will get a chance to pull the levers and you will realise that signal men did not need to go to the gym to exercise their biceps.

A very unusual and unique experience.Absolutely amazing to be next to the track watching trains go by on a regular basis.The volunteers who run the place are very knowledgeable and it is amazing to learn how technology replaced the boxes. Highlight of the day is a simulation of how the signals used to be used. You get a chance to pull the signal levers and respond to signals from other signal boxes. Great funVery steep steps lead up to the box which may make entry difficult. If you can't manage the steps sit in the small garden and watch the trains go by. St Albans station is adjacent to the box.

The old St. Albans Signal Box (accessed through the parking lot across the bridge from the City Station), is open twice a month for visitors. The volunteers are helpful, knowledgeable, and patient with young children. My kids loved it, and so did I! We weren't expecting much, but we ending up spending two pleasant hours there.

This was an unexpectedly nice afternoon. Run by volunteers the St Albans South Signal Box is open twice a month on a Sunday. The volunteers were all very enthusiastic, helpful and chatty. We were given a talk and a demonstration in the signal box and the kids got to have a go at signaling in a train. The gardens are pretty and there is some lovely, vintage train memorabilia in the museum.
