A huge square and still used as a market although on the midweek day we were there it wasn't the best we have come across. Still a lovely backdrop of the cafes and the City Hall that sets it off nicely.

it is a big square that is surrounded by many good cafes and restaurants. It also has a nice view to the city hall. If you are in Maastricht, just walk there and you will be urged to sit in one of the cafes!

I'm sure that this city looks great in Summer and is a good destination but don't bother for a Christmas market as it is poor and of a standard you expect in any small city in the UK. Go to Germany as the know how to do markets !.

The place, the people, the cleanliness, the nice vibes... All combine to give a calm but charming visit. Must pass on during the off days. Hang on in the near by cafes, eat some street sold local specialties....

Great atmosphere all weekend!! We arrived on the Friday morning and there was a full market on, Saturday was a different smaller affair, but people gathered here all weekend, enjoying the atmosphere.

Almost every place/city in Netherland have specific day settle as market day.. at Enschede it is Saturday and one other day (sorry, I forgot..). At Maastricht, the market day held in Market Square every Friday. Here you can find specific food/local food and other things as well sell in the square in city centre. If you like fish so much, you came to the right place, as it is one of Maastricht have a name for in Netherland (dont know why, as it is one of the region that far from sea shore...). Please have a taste of the traditional way of eating fresh harring fish (only with sea salt). If you dont to eat it raw, there is plenty of choices. As for me, I like the smoked mackerel.. Dont forget to stop by at the Reitz, at the other side of the market square to have some award winning fries you can eat with the fish..

Loved the market place and all of the shops. It is very touristy but it is a nice little piece of the Netherlands that is historical.

I visited the market square during an autumn sunny day, and it was nice place to visit and makes you feel the historic nature of the place and city, from there you can start your journey to the rest of the city. Nice shops and cafes around.

An interesting area and we would have liked to have been there earlier. It really was not what we needed but the people were nice to talk to us.

There seems to be something different on every day, Saturday was a market, Sunday was a 2nd hand market. There are several eating, drinking places around the square from restaurant, brasseries even KFC and Burger King. Or just sit in the sun and watch the world go by

There are lots of shops and restaurants around the square which adds to the lovely atmosphere. A lovely place to wonder around and through

It's a beautiful area and while the surrounding streets are crowded with people, this square is much more spacious. It's even nicer at night, when you can actually watch your surroundings in nicer atmosphere.

With small exhibitions, bar and restaurants and int he winter a skating rink, this is the hub of Maastricht and a place you have to visit whilst in the area.

Read the weather forecast because this is best enjoyed on a sunny day and this summer Holland has been given to sudden showers. Eat fabulous herring and fried potatoes, window shop for fabrics, buy traditional licorice, walk around then have a coffee at the cafes surrounding the market.
