We've seen caves before and nearly didn't bother with a trip from León to Valporquero to see these ones, we are very glad we did. They are enormous and unlike anything we have experienced before. You have to go on a guided tour, no option just to wander around, we took the "special" guided tour which lasted 2 hours. Our guide Jose Manuel was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic, he was one of the original electricians that installed the miles of cabling and lighting that have been so well placed in the caves. The tour was in Spanish, not a problem for us as we speak Spanish, but if you don't I would still recommend a visit as he uses lots of hand gestures and when you see the caverns they are incredible.We went in August so there wasn't any water in the caves, but in winter there are torrents of water cascading through and I imagine they would be very impressive to see.They also offer activities for professional cavers in areas not accessible to the general public.Easy walking throughout the caves as they are so big, you follow a cemented path and stairs, the temperature is a constant 7º all year so do take a jacket and sensible shoes, trainers are fine.There is a café/bar where you can have a coffee, snack or menu, also there are picnic tables all around so you can DIY and parking is easy and plentiful.

These caves are located in a small village and the road to arrive there is worth the visit. The caves are big and very interesting and I suggest you take the "special guided tour" with lots of interesting information..

These caves are very beautiful and well worth the trip. An easy drive from Leon or from the Oviedo direction. The journey to the caves is very scenic particularly the part through the Hoces. The caves themselves have huge caverns with fantastic formations and are fairly easy to negotiate even if you are not superfit. The guide spoke in Spanish but we were given a very informative booklet about the caves at the ticket window, this was available in english and other languages. There was a cafe on site and lovely picnic areas so you could make it a full day out. The tour lasts about 90 minutes.

these caves are a pleasant and easy 50 min drive from centre of Leon.The caves themselves are immense and beautifully different.Dont worry if you are afraid of enclosed spaces the initial walk through tunnels before the caves are the tightest part of the experience.Our guide only spoke Spainish, but if you have eyes thats all you need.We only took the hour long tour but that felt sufficient.

And had the biggest steak of my life! It was terrific to eat inside an actual cave, the restaurant was very good. But the steak was just too big for me! haha

We took a drive to the caves from Leon, and the landscape on the way there was just beautiful. The caves had some really interesting stalactite and stalagmite structures, and some beautiful chambers. Only a small part of the caves are open to visitors.
