nash farm battlefield

The Nash Farm Battlefield provided a brief history of the Union cavalry raid during the Atlanta campaign of 1864. Being a civil war buff and wanting to see the important sites of the 1864 campaign during the time they occurred (or as close to as I could get), I chose the Nash Farm Battlefield as it was the largest cavalry breakthrough in Georgia. I was there on a Friday morning and had the place to myself. The site itself is small, with only a museum and open fields left. There are other buildings on the site that you can rent for special events, however they are not linked to the museum or the battle themselves.The museum offers pretty much a chance to see artifacts found on the site during archeological digs, with a lot of the items found by kids during summer camps. There are two rooms with historical items from that period. Items here focused on women's clothing, but also included a bible that was donated to the museum that wasn't wanted by another site. In the second room was a buggy that was common during that time.Most other rooms had display cases with the artifacts. There was very little that actually explained the battle itself and you have to seek it out. I would have thought that they would have at least one room dedicated to the battle and the Atlanta campaign. The volunteer did give me a one page sheet with a newspaper account of the battle. Along the walls throughout the museum are signs with information about significant figures from the area that played a role in the Civil War. This was one of the best parts of the museum.There are three rooms located next to the museum's entrance that add to the experience. The first room has old fashion farm equipment. The second room is the kid's room where they can try on clothing and play games. On one wall are two original Walt Disney sketches given to one of the museum's original benefactors. The last room is their library and research room. You can't take any books outside of the library, but you are free to come by to do any research that you need to do. Most of the books were historical in nature, but there were historical fiction books as well.Outside of the museum is a recently dedicated monument to Confederate units who participated in the battle. There are also several interpretive signs that explained the battle itself. You are not able to walk out onto the field, but you have a clear line of sight of the entire open area. The museum itself is only open Fridays and Saturdays from 9:00am to 5:00pm. There is no cost to visit the museum or the site, however you can leave a donation if you choose to do.If you are interested in the US Civil War the Nash Farm Battlefield would be worth visiting, as I found it interesting. Otherwise most people will not get much out of the visit.

We were there for the 150 th annicersary of the Kilpatrick's Cavalry Raid at that location. There was a reenactment of the battle that happened there. There was also a dedication of the monument erected at that place. The farm is a beautiful rolling landscape and the staff (all volunteer) is knowledgeable and courteous to visitors. There is a museum and gift shop for the visitors. Summer Archaeological cams are held for young folks there also. A must for a Civil War Buff and History Buff.

Spacious! Good place to relax with friends and family for a pic-nic or other social gathering. They have periodic events (re-enactment of a civil war battle) and other historic festivals from time to time that are well worth attending.
