Toured this home one Saturday, and was the only ones on the tour. The home is not that majastic as some of the other older homes in Macon, but our tour guide was very knowledgeable about Sidney Lanier and his life, which is what the tour is mainly about. He was only born in the home, he was not raised there, nor did he ever live there. But if you have time to visit it is worth the time. You will learn something about a very smart man.

Hidden in downtown off the beaten path. Good place to spend the day, interesting history about Sidney Lanier and his family. He was a poet in the 1800's. Fought in the War between the states. Died young, in his 30's from tuberculosis, if I remember correctly.

I was here for a family wedding last weekend. It's an excellent venue for a wedding or private party. All of the wedding party had an excellent time. Living in somewhat nearby South Carolina, I'd recommend spring or fall use of this location.

A real good example of a cottage in Georgia. Not a Mansion but a great home to see how things were in the past.

I have visited this structure many times. It is a wonderful venue for a private social event as well as a fine location to learn some history.

I visited this wonderful cottage on Saturday. Bernard gave the best tour of any historical home I have ever had. If you can, take your time in this beautiful gem. There is so much to know about Sidney Lanier, and his life. My time there really made me want to pick up a good book on Sidney Lanier, and dive in!!!

Experienced this beautiful location for a friend's wedding reception. It was a beautiful place with the feel of a southern home of a by gone era.

Docents give interesting verbal factual tours. One gets a feeling for the heritage of this beautiful town.

It's a sweet little cottage with interesting items to view and perhaps be inspired to read a few poems of Lanier's Georgia tributes. Put it on your list along with several other stops in Macon. The walking tour would be worth your while and the cottage can be among the stops to round out your feeling of Georgia past and still glowing present.

It was fun to see how people live back and the day and learn the history of Sidney Lanier.

Even if just passing through town, be sure to take a short break to tour the Sidney Lanier Cottage. Our tour guide, Connie, was very well prepared and exhibited true Southern hospitality. Mr. Lanier was a soldier during the War Between the States as well as a musician, composer, poet, novelist, critic, and scholar. He was also a devoted husband and father who unfortunately passed away at a relatively early age due to the tuberculosis contracted while in a Federal prisoner of war camp at Point Lookout, Maryland. The home contains much memorabilia and is near other Macon historical and cultural sites. Even the old houses on the same street are interesting to see. There is a small gift shop on the enclosed porch. We purchased a CD of flute music that features compositions by Stephen Foster and Sidney Lanier. It was excellent. Park on the street. We found a spot in front of the house next door. Try to read Mr. Lanier's only novel entitled TIGER-LILLIES [you can do so at no charge on line at "Documenting the American South" http://docsouth.unc.edu/southlit/lanier/menu.html] and some of his poetry before touring the house. It will enrich your visit. We had a most pleasant visit and highly recommend this venue.

As a Northerner visiting Georgia for the first time, I knew very little about the history of Macon or any of its illustrious inhabitants. The visitors center offers a very convenient trolley tour of the city's main sights, and one of the regular stops is the charming Sidney Lanier Cottage. I knew very little about Sidney Lanier before I went, but I sure know a lot now. A masterful poet, composer, musician, and even Civil War veteran, Sidney Lanier wrote some of Georgia's best loved pastoral verses, such as "The Marshes of Glynn." Only the first floor of the cottage is open to the public, and it's only the house Lanier was born in, not a home that he lived in for any extended period of time. But I had a very enthusiastic guide who carefully took me through the many Lanier-related artifacts displayed in each carefully appointed room. Touring the house only takes about half an hour, but the friendly staff will call the trolley when you're done to be sure that you can get a ride to your next stop, or you can just walk down the street for a few minutes to see downtown Macon's other historic sights.
