The Carlos Museum is one of the Southeast's premier ancient art museums...

I found it very informative and extremely useful for students. You need to plan for more than 2 hours, because it seems small and is so much to see!

This is a great little museum on the Emory campus in Atlanta. An exceptional collection of Egyptian antiquities .

After taking a tour of Emory University, we decided to check out the museum. It is very pleasant and has some really nice pieces. It is a very relaxing place to wonder around and look at Greek, Asian, Egyptian, and the Americas art. The museum is not super big so it isn't overwhelming. I really enjoyed being there.

This marvelous exhibit, organized by the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, will only be in Atlanta until June 21, 2015. It features art from all over the African continent that relates to the movement of the sun, moon, and other celestial bodies. As you walk in, you see 4 foot tall Dogon tribal masks worn in dances that tell the story of their origin in the stars - specifically from Sirius B...and the dances pre-date astronomers discovery of this star! Paintings, sculpture, masks, all with wonderful explanations/interpretations! Photos of ancient megalithic astronomy circles, reminiscent of Stone Henge - it's all there. Breathtaking!! When you finish with this exhibit, check out the permanent exhibits - a large Egyptian mummy collection, ancient objects from around the Americas, Greece, Rome, etc. I love the Sumerian cylinder scrolls, with intricate scenes carved in them, the kohl pots that held eye make-up for Egyptian ladies thousands of years ago, their carved head rests used instead of pillows, the elaborate gold jewelry and pottery from Central and South America...The bookstore has some interesting and hard to find items (books and gifts) if you are so inclined...

Located on the beautiful Emory Campus in Decatur (Atlanta), this museum may not be all that big, but it has some incredible treasures. From Egyptian headrests (2625 BC) and coffin face mask (945 BC - 712 BC) to a variety of ancient Greek coins, the museum has some "really old stuff!" They also offer Docent guided tours, guest lectures, chamber concerts, kids programs, a book club with University faculty and so much more! The museum is free one Thursday a month from 1-4, (I think it varies so you'll want to check their website). Speaking of their website, it is amazing in itself with great photos of the artifacts at the museum and information on all of the activities, clubs, membership, even where to park on campus. A must see and in my opinion, a must join if you live in the Atlanta area and want to attend the variety of events at the museum.

*****The bookstore (giftshop) is amazing!!!!!! Make sure to check it out. Lot's of obscure titles. This museum is wonderful for lovers of art, history, travel, and more! I finally went and it was amazing! The displays are wonderfully done, the specimens are unique and beautiful. You will pay about 8 bucks to get in and 7 bucks parking. It is tucked into the Emory campus but the signage is pretty good and people will help you. I won't upload my pics (they are the same as most of the others) or tell you about every item but it is lovely. I think this is way up on the list of Atlanta attractions.

If you are interested in objects thousens of years old ( pottery, mummies, jewelery), that's the place to go. I have seen it in so many museums around the world...so for me it was not that interesting. But it was a cold rainy day, we were close by after visiting the CDC museum, so we went there. The building itself is nice from the inside. And before you wast your money in world of coca cola, go to Michael C. Carlos Museum. Better Joice. A lot of kids were there with there parents , I think that's a great opportunity for family education.

Great collection of early pottery and other manmade objects, but could be better labeled or described.

I'm surprised at how many people who live in/near Atlanta even know this place exists. It has incredible Mesa-American and Egyptian exhibits, and an excellent bookstore for history lovers. Plus the architecture of the building and the setting on Emory University's quad makes this a fun place to visit when the weather is nice. Stroll around the beautiful campus before or after your visit. I was lucky enough to see the mummy of Ramses before he was returned to Egypt! The Carlos Museum sponsors many exciting exhibits, so check the website for your favorite, and GO!!

As far as I know this, is the only museum in the southeast that has a permanent mummy exhibit. It is not the largest museum, but it is worth the trip to the Emory University campus.

The self-tour guide is solid. The Egyptian collection is what the Carlos is known for and is excellent. Worth an hour or two

The museum has art and items from Rome, Greece, Africa, and the Americas, and we went specifically for the Egypt exhibit. That exhibit was very good, with a nice collection of mummies and artifacts. I was also impressed by an exhibit from Emory's own collection called "GOD SPOKE THE EARTH: STORIES OF GENESIS IN PRINTS AND DRAWINGS." Adult admission is $8, and children are $6. There is a nice bookstore, as well. The one drawback for me was the size. While it has a lot of artifacts, for the size building it was in and for the cost of admission, I honestly expected to see more.

Usually museums can get a little boring, but not the Carlos museum. I love going to visit on a rainy afternoon.

I am not a huge art fan, but this is a well known museum on Emory's campus. Had no idea how well known it was until I learned more people knew about the museum than the world-famous college on whose campus it sits. It's a decent sized museum. Parking can be a little expensive. It's been a while since I've been. There are traveling exhibits. It's more than I would like to pay for a museum as a student especially since I was obliged to go there for classes and I had to pay full price every time.

This museum has a fantastic collection of Greek Egyptian and South American artifacts that are pristine and beautifully restored. Also, their collection of Egyptian mummies is out of this world! Plus, it's so well laid out. If you're a bookworm, I would also recommend a visit to the gift shop. Lots of interesting and unusual titles, with all kinds of books for kids.
