Lake Sara isn't far from where I grew up. We visited a brother in law from Chicago who owns a second home there. It seemed to me like lots of folk from Chicago had places here since that was about as far as they easily could drive to get away from it.It was different than downstate lakes of my youth in that there is a very active social whirl with pretty extensive boat houses, shore pilings and so on. Sort of Chicago away from Chicago. Interesting but different for this former downstate boy.Lots of rules, heavily enforced. Certainly not the wilderness here but really sort of a neighborhood. Sort of an upper middle class Chicago neighborhood on the water.Interesting.

I love Lake Sara and grew up going to the beach (long ago), and have been boating on it since 1988. I love cruising and looking at the houses, fishing, and having picnics at the pavilions. There are two enclosed pavilions for wedding receptions, class reunions, or family gatherings. Rules are enforced by local water authority, so it is safer and better controlled that many other lakes. The Good Neighbors Club looks out for the well-being of the lake and hosts a 4th of July fireworks show every year. Two marinas are available, a resort, as well as camps for both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Come enjoy a fantastic display of fireworks shot over our beautiful lake! The show starts at 9:05 pm on Saturday, July 5th. It can be viewed from your boat on the lake, from private docks, or from the Lake Sara Beach (take Lake Sara Road S from IL-32/33 to 4-way stop; right on Moccasin Road; left on Beach Road to beach). There is free parking at the beach and there will be a food stand and Culver's frozen custard. Hope to see you there!

I've stayed on this lake several times. I like that it's not a party lake, and doesn't have huge boats that cause a lot of wake. There are a ton of rules so make sure you understand all of them before hitting the water because the patrol WILL catch you. Here's a list of the latest rules http://www.effinghamwaterauthority.org/2011Ordinances.pdf

This place is hopping! There are homes around the lake, everyone has a boat dock and is ready to party. This place comes alive in the Summer with a friendly atmosphere for boating and outdoor fun. Everyone is outside enjoying the Sun, water, and fresh air. I would not call it a party atmosphere, but everyone is relaxed, friendly, and the community is tight!

Beautiful public lake with 27 miles of shoreline and average fishing. Water sports are only for tubing or skiing. No jet boats or jet skis allowed. The lake is patrolled with a heavy hand. There isn't any swimming allowed from a boat, even in no wake areas. The local residents do not want the lake to turn into a Party Lake. If you are in your 70's or 80's then this is the lake for you to visit. This lake acts more like a private lake.

I wish I had a boat and could drift for hours. The houses and the people are both perfect. I would put this on my places to go back to again.

When we rented the pontoon boat from Boatdockers Marina, we had no ideal July 7th would be a bombey, 104 degrees. Once you get kids and grandkids, excited about something, it is really hard to cancel, so we didn't and it was hot, but alot of fun.Benjamin, that works at the Boatdockers Marina, was exceptionally, nice and helpful. This is a very fine young man and did everything he could to help us. The fishing was great, boat ran good and the grandkids loved the big inner tube and being drug behind the boat. We only had one small problem," Lake Patrol". Make sure you wear a white or orange hat to tube. This is just one of the, many, many, many rules. We thought the officer could have been friendlier with his warning. Everything else was just great

My family has many wonderful memories at this lake. Wish they had a few more things close by, like pizza or ice cream at the marina =) but overall a relaxing well kept lake.

This lake is nice for putting around and looking at homes but when it comes to water sports good luck. The water can get really really crowded and choppy. The Water Patrol Police are ridiculous. I got yelled at for sitting on my foot and not flat on my butt. Also keep in mind you are not allowed to drink on the lake. The entry rates are a bit high for what your getting to. Not to mention you have to get a sticker to from the Effingham Water authority to be on the water and its not cheap at all. Its close and convenient to Effingham but there are far better lakes to play on.
