This park is wonderful for a quiet walk and the scenery and wildlife are plentiful as well. This park has so much potential and probably will have even more to offer in the next few years.Excellent walking trail that is a mile around

Our family visited the park to complete the Letter box scavenger hunt that the Preservation Parks run throughout the summer. This new park was a big hit with the kids, they loved the dirt trail portion with the rock formations and the stream. The gravel path trail is a great walk. Another nice park for Delaware county.

If you want a little hike in nature this is a place to visit. Shale Hollow Preserve is one of several Preservation Parks Delaware County. It is the newest to my knowledge. It is compact but full of nature and, so far, not widely visited. It is close to home; we have been there several times including today. It is small. Parking is limited but I have not seen the lots full yet. There is a nice "loop" trail with both shaded woods and open sunny meadow. The trail is improved with gravel but can be quite muddy after a rain. It includes a couple of steep hills. There is also a creek-side area with shale cliffs. You can hike up the dirt trail to the top of the cliffs and observe the cliffs and creek below. You can also hike down along the dirt paths near the creek and commune with nature. We found and shared a raccoon skeleton with some fur; kids seem to love stuff like this once they get past the "yech" factor.Parents with small children will need to keep them close. The gravel trail could accommodate a stroller but is best for hiking. Try it out; you'll probably enjoy yourself.
