Remarkable opportunity while in Reno to check out this fabulous museum. Displays are excellent. We had a wonderful lunch with a very interesting chief special and great table service. Appropriate for the while family and highly recommended.

Since it is the state level museum of art, I expected to see a large permanent western art collection, plus contemporary art from the west. Instead, there were a few interesting canvases and some interesting visiting exhibits. Small scale but nice.

I love this museum. The design is interesting as is the setting in an old near downtown neighborhood. The collection is small but well-curated. And the staff is super nice and friendly

We finally joined this last time we visited. We usually go to visit as we have free time during the day. They have lots of other things besides art. The last time we were there they had an exhibit of Lincoln documents ie emansipation proclimation Nevada statehood. Check their website for what is current.

What a pleasant surprise. Not only is the architecture impressive, the permanent collection is excellent. And a fabulous restaurant and their hidden gem - the museum gift shop is first class!!! DON'T MISS THIS GEM !!!

We visited the museum to see the animal taxidermy exhibit. It was creative, amusing and puzzling. The butterflies were beautiful, and the peacock dress fantastic. Very entertaining with an odd twist.

I've visited the Nevada Museum of Art several times, and this last visit I made just continues to impress me. First rate galleries over multiple floors, and wonderful visiting exhibits. In July I was thrilled with the Doris Duke Shangri La exhibit. In a previous visit there was an exhibit of Frida Kahlo's photography that was superb. There is also a lovely little café serving incredibly good food by a local chef. Be sure to have lunch there. The gift shop is a great place to make a purchase or two for gifts to take home to friends and family.

Just visited to see the "36th Star, Nevada's Journey from Territory to State." It was quite well done and the highlight was a display showing the actual Emancipation Proclamation which was on loan from the National Archives in Washington DC. What a coup to get that document here for the state's 150th birthday. This museum is world class.

The animal taxidermy art was interesting. Some strange some amusing. Old paintings very good. However, the room dedicated to the snow (this was really salt) and the blue balls...Really??? Made you question the $8 you spent to get in. I went and viewed this the Museum of Art...didn't lose the full $8 admission here cause did get to laugh at the animal/trash exhibit. This was funny. Especially if you've ever had any of those critters get in your trash at home. What I call the moving wall paper exhibit where the ladies in the pictures stand up and shoot catches your eye. Note the old shaped white "thing" in the animal exhibit area. I related to the mouse when I was looking at the white salt snow and blue balls...haha

Some of the pieces were interesting at this museum. It was a nice visit seeing the artists in this area.

There were only a few exhibits - not much "art" and several closed areas. It appears to be a work-in-progress. The rooftop view is spectacular, however!

Even though we paid the Senior rate, this museum basically has nothing in it. It did have a Civil War exhibit with a few pictures and Soldiers service records but the other rooms were basically empty. For example one large room had two items in it. Pins on a wall (and only on a small portion of the wall)stating it was rivers flowing North (with no additional info) and rock formation on the ground. The 4th floor we were told was an outdoor Sculpture exhibit. We went up there and again three items which was a table, sculpture and rock formation of the sun. We left. Huge disappointment. While walking to our car we noticed next door was an Art Gallery with local artist works for sale. We found that small Gallery much more interesting then the Museum and told the owner of the Gallery, he was very grateful. I'm sorry I can't remember the name, but if you go to the museum, by pass it and you will see the gallery.

We had a week up at Squaw so took an afternoon excursion to Reno to see the Doris Duke Islamic art exhibit. Great staff who really seem to enjoy sharing the museum with you.Very interesting and some beautiful examples of tile and carving as well as some background on an unusual woman.I have to say though a real highlight of the trip was our patio lunch at tbe museum's cafe, Chez Louie. Light well thought out menu, nice, quality glassware and polite, friendly service. I would go back just for the restaurant. The rest of Reno? Not so much. The River walk is a neat idea, but when we were there at 3-4pm on a Summer day it was definitely seedy and even a little scary. Stick to the museum, have lunch and find some scenic beauty elsewhere.
